What are Civic Agencies?

“Civic Agencies” is the collective term that refers to all agencies, boards, committees, commissions and task forces to which the City Council appoints council members, members of the public or representatives of external organizations.

These bodies play an important role in shaping programs, services, and decisions that impact our city.

Civic Agencies

City Council appoints representatives to 2 types of civic agencies:

City Agencies: Established by City Council under the Municipal Government Act or other legislation
External Agencies: Entities not established by or controlled by City Council, often with separate corporate or intergovernmental status

Tribunals

Tribunals are quasi-judicial boards that hear appeals on decisions made by City Administration. Under the governing bylaws,

City Councillors are not eligible for appointment to these bodies. Tribunals operate at arm’s length from City Council and provide a fair and impartial appeal process.
