Protection of Privacy

Privacy in the City is regulated by the Protection of Privacy Act (POPA). The Act ensures that personal information is managed and protected appropriately. It establishes mandatory privacy-protection practices for public bodies and encourages the design of programs and services that prioritize privacy protection.

Privacy Management Program

The City of Edmonton’s Privacy Management Program determines how the City protects your personal information. It details how we respond to reports of privacy incidents and review City initiatives to ensure your personal information is protected right from the start.

Reporting a Privacy Incident

A privacy incident happens when personal information is potentially collected, accessed, used, shared or destroyed without authorization. If you believe that a City business area or employee has inappropriately collected, used or disclosed your or someone else’s personal information, please complete and submit the Privacy Incident Report form so we can look into the incident and take steps to contain the incident if necessary.

Personal Information Corrections

If you need to update your name, address or other contact information in a City’s system, please call 311 and they will help you.

To request a correction to personal information in a City record, please submit a completed Request to Correct Personal Information form. If you have any questions, please contact Corporate Access and Privacy or 780-496-5222.

Access to Information

Access to information at the City is governed by the Access to Information Act (ATIA). The Act regulates the process for releasing and obtaining information from government and public bodies. City information can be accessed in several ways depending on the nature of the information. They may already be publicly available, requestable directly from the business area that manages the information, or accessible through a formal ATIA request.

Access to Information Statistics
