The Yellowhead Trail Freeway Conversion included the widening of Fort Road to 6 lanes from Yellowhead Trail to 66 Street.
Project Information
Fort Road, between 66 Street and Yellowhead Trail, is now open to full capacity.
The new widened road features three lanes for both northbound and southbound traffic, and improved access to businesses via the new 125 Avenue collector road. The 125 Avenue collector links Yellowhead Trail, Industrial Heights and local commercial businesses west of Fort Road and along 82 Street.
Landscaping for the project was largely completed in 2024; some work was completed in 2025.
Public Engagement
The City values public input and recognizes its importance in identifying the needs of all Yellowhead Trail road users, area residents and businesses. Project History
Fort Road mainline was reopened to the public in October 2023 at reduced capacity to accommodate ongoing structural work on the CN rail crossing. Additional lanes are anticipated to reopen beginning in early summer with full completion in fall 2024.
To improve business access on Fort Road west of 125 Avenue and the 71 Street business loop, existing access from Yellowhead Trail westbound off-ramp will be closed permanently. A new access point at 125 Avenue west will be opened. This closure is expected to begin in late July.
Local businesses and visitors can now access the area through Fort Road (both northbound and southbound) or 125 Avenue (both westbound and eastbound). Additionally, the existing eastbound and westbound access from 82 Street will remain open to traffic.

This year, work on the Fort Road Widening Project focused on completing the CN bridge over Fort Road and removing the temporary bridge detours. With trains operating on the new structure since the middle of July, construction activity has been progressing towards completing the majority of work by the end of 2023, with some carryover work expected for 2024.
On October 30, Fort Road reopened to reduced capacity with 1 lane of traffic for travel in both directions. As construction continues, we plan to gradually reopen more lanes of traffic throughout 2023 and into early 2024, along with pedestrian and active mode access.
Starting April 10, 2023, Fort Road will be closed in both directions between 125 Avenue and 127 Avenue. During the closure, traffic will be rerouted to 66 Street (Yellowhead Trail to Fort Road) using 125 Avenue (Fort Road to 66 Street).
