As part of the Yellowhead Trail Freeway Conversion, changes will include widening the road to 6 lanes from 50 Street, east towards the river.
Project Update - April 2026
The design for the roadway network following the removal of the Yellowhead Trail/66 Street intersection is ready to share. In addition to the intersection removal, the design includes the closure of nearby direct access points at 67 Street and 68 Street, both north and south of Yellowhead Trail, to improve safety and traffic operations in the area. Construction of off-corridor improvements will begin in 2026. Construction at Yellowhead Trail and 66 Street begins in 2027.
Proposed Changes
The City of Edmonton will be making improvements to Yellowhead Trail between Wayne Gretzky Drive and 61 Street. This work includes removing the signalized intersection at 66 Street and nearby direct accesses along Yellowhead Trail to support safe and efficient traffic flow.
While the long-term plan for the freeway includes a partial interchange at 66 Street (21.58 MB) the City will advance work now to improve safety and traffic operations in the area.
Planning and design are underway to:
- Removal of the signalized intersection at Yellowhead Trail and 66 Street
- Close nearby direct access points at 62 Street, 67 Street and 68 Street north and south of Yellowhead Trail
- Identify and develop new access options for local traffic between 66 Street and Yellowhead Trail
- Provide alternative access routes for surrounding communities
- Establish new pedestrian and active transportation connections along Yellowhead Trail and 66 Street
To prepare for the future intersection removal, the eastbound Yellowhead Trail turn onto northbound 66 Street will be permanently closed starting November 28.

Public Engagement
The City values public input and recognizes its importance in identifying the needs of all Yellowhead Trail road users, area residents and businesses. Each segment of the Yellowhead Trail Freeway Conversion Program is being built to balance the roadway requirements with community, business and commuter needs.
There will be opportunities for the public to share their thoughts throughout the design phase of the project.
