Victoria Park, named in honour of Queen Victoria, is located on the north bank of the North Saskatchewan River. It is an ideal spot for a picnic followed by a game of baseball or cricket. The park also provides access to the pathways along the River Valley Road and is perfect for walking, running, biking or in-line skating.

Discover Victoria Park All Year Long

Victoria Park is a lively place in the River Valley that you can enjoy in every season. In the summer, you can have picnics, play sports, or join community events. In the winter, you can go skating or take part in fun outdoor activities.

The Victoria Park Pavilion makes visits even better. It has accessible washrooms and a warm indoor space, giving everyone a comfortable place to rest and enjoy the park.

What to Do at Victoria Park

Winter Wonderland
Lace up your skates in style! The Pavilion's change room has seating, lockers and an indoor viewing area – all set against an eye-catching backdrop: Exotic Species art installation. Glide along the famous IceWay and skate across the Victoria Skating Oval with ease. Explore the snowy trails to the north west by snowshoeing or cross-country skiing.

Year-Round Convenience

Enjoy the river valley’s scenic walking and cycling trails. The Pavilion provides comfort, shelter and washroom facilities. Portable washrooms are available year-round on the park's east side for visitors.

Accessibility

Victoria Park aims to be welcoming and accessible for everyone. While we work to make the park easier to use, some parts of the existing infrastructure may not meet everyone’s needs. Please review the accessibility features listed below.

Winter Season Accessibility

During winter, accessing Victoria Park involves additional hazards due to snow and ice. Staff prioritize the safety and comfort of visitors by clearing snow and ice from certain pathways after each snowfall.

Staff clear snow along these trails, but we can’t guarantee that all hazards will be removed, particularly in areas with gravel or grass. Please use caution, especially near spots where the trail meets the ice surface and along ramps.

Parking

The main lot is a gravel lot that features two accessible parking stalls situated on a concrete pad.

Pathways

Victoria Park's pathways are mostly gravel, with only a few paved sections. From the accessible parking area, the trail access starts past the wood-partitioned area with a wide egress to accommodate mobility devices, equipment wagons and more. Gravel paths link the parking lot to the Pavilion. To reach the drop-in and bookable picnic sites, visitors can also use the gravel service road located west of the parking lot. Please note that this service road is shared with park servicing vehicles.

Building Entry

The Pavilion has ramp access at both the front and back entrances. The main pavilion washroom entrance is the south-facing door located in the centre of the building.

Access to the skate change room, which is only available in the winter season, is provided through two additional entrances on the southeast side of the building. The southernmost of these doors has a direct ramp.
The back entrance is the closest access point to bookable picnic sites #3, #4, and #5 and can be reached via the gravel service road.

Safety Tip: Some corners inside the facility are tight, so take your time and be careful when moving between spaces.

Automatic Doors

Accessible push-buttons are installed at the pavilion’s main washroom entrance, back door, and the skate change room's main door. Public access to the skate change room is available seasonally, in the winter only.

Washrooms

An accessible washroom stall is available in each of the gendered washrooms.

Seating

Year-round bench seating is available directly outside the main pavilion entrance. Additional seating options, including benches and tables, are available in the skate change area.

Warming Station - Skate Change Area

The skate change area has geothermal heating, ensuring a comfortable, warm environment for winter recreation breaks or a convenient indoor area for changing into and out of skates.

Ice Access

Skate matting is installed outside the Pavilion, forming a path from the skate change room and main entrance directly to the ice entry points. There are two entry points from the Pavilion:

Northern Entry Point

Located just outside the Pavilion entrance and features a wooden handrail with reflective decals. Provides direct access to the Skating Oval.

Southern Entry Point

The ramp, located south of the skate change area doors, provides access to this point on the main path. From here, visitors can connect to the Skating Oval or take a path leading to the IceWay. When the skating oval is unavailable for public skating (reserved for the Edmonton Speed Skating Association), visitors must use this alternative path to reach the IceWay from the skate change area.

Safety Tip: Please be aware that the skate matting on the entryway and ramp is on a slight incline and can get slippery when it’s wet or icy. Use caution when walking or skating in this area.

The Oval is unavailable to the public during these times:

Check Status and Conditions Before Visiting

The Oval is well protected from inclement weather by its location in the River Valley and the surrounding trees. It is also home to the Edmonton Speed Skating Association (ESSA). The ESSA shares the use of the rink with the City.
