The City offers a variety of outdoor adventure programs for youth, families and groups. Learn more about our daycamps, drop-in outdoor programs and the available activities in our parks.

Outdoor Adventure Programs provides outdoor programs to community groups, Edmonton and area schools, corporations and the general public.

All equipment is provided.

Free Drop-in Programs

Join Outdoor Adventure Experiences in the fall, winter and spring for free, drop-in family oriented programs: Play Rangers and Family Adventure Club North! Program offerings change monthly.

Play Rangers

Play Rangers focuses on children and family participation, with planned special outdoor recreation activities that can be enjoyed by all. Play Rangers will take place at Whitemud Park (13909 Fox Drive NW) weekly on Saturdays and Northeast River Valley Park (903 153 Avenue NE) every third Saturday of the month.

Themes change monthly and can include:

  • Building your own survival shelter out of tarps and ropes
  • Playing disc golf
  • Trying slacklining
  • Learning about map reading and look for some orienteering controls in the park
  • Trying to start a fire with a flint and steel
  • Learning how to use a GPS, try and find a geocache
  • Basic navigation skills including map reading and compass work
  • Building a fire without paper and learning how to build simple tarp shelters
  • Making popcorn over an open fire
  • Kicksleding
  • Snowshoeing
  • Snowfort making

Come dressed for the weather, wear closed-toe shoes and don’t forget water and snacks. Children under 6 need to be accompanied by an adult. Children 6-12 years old are welcome to attend on their own.

Program Leader Competencies

All leaders:

  • Have completed a security clearance
  • Are trained in first aid
  • Are certified specialists in fun!

Leaders are facilitators providing fun activities and ensuring safety for everyone.

Programming will still be available on rainy and snowy days but may be cancelled during severe weather.

Parents and caregivers are responsible for their children at all times and must be available in the event of an emergency.
