Mackenzie Ravine Boardwalk and Stairs

The MacKenzie Ravine Boardwalk will be removed and the staircase will be renewed. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2027.

Project Overview

The timber boardwalks and staircase located within the Mackenzie Ravine near 142 Street and 93 Avenue have reached the end of their service life. These structures provide pathway connectivity through the Mackenzie Ravine to the adjacent Crestwood and Parkview neighbourhoods, Buena Vista Park and along the North Saskatchewan River Valley.

An April 2026 inspection determined that the boardwalk could operate for 2026 with minor repairs. It will be reopened at the beginning of June 2026, and remain open until the end of October 2026.

In summer 2027, the boardwalk will be removed and a granular, ground-level trail will be constructed. The existing staircase at 142 Street will be replaced with a new wooden staircase that meets current City standards. This work is expected to be complete in fall 2027.

Pathway, neighbourhood and park connectivity will be maintained except for the narrow trail connection from the boardwalks at the bottom of the ravine up to Riverside Drive. This segment will be closed in 2027 due to encroachment on private property and safety concerns, such as erosion and bank stability.

Seasonal Closure and Removal

The boardwalk, which runs east to west, was closed in November 2025 due to seasonal safety concerns. An inspection in April 2026 determined that the boardwalk could operate for 2026 with minor repairs, but would require renewal construction in 2027. The trail is expected to reopen to trail users in June, once these repairs are completed.

Indigenous Engagement

The MacKenzie Ravine features several mineral-rich natural water springs, which have significance to many Indigenous Nations. Partnership and engagement with the nations to understand knowledge, use and importance of the area has informed the trail design and protection of the ravine. Ceremony and participation will continue through the duration of the project.
