17 Street Bridges over Yellowhead Trail will be replaced. Construction will begin in late summer 2026.
Project Update - April 2026
Construction will begin in late summer 2026, starting with demolition of the structure over eastbound Yellowhead Trail. Foundation and substructure work will follow. In 2027, the eastbound bridge will be constructed. The structure over the westbound Yellowhead Trail will be demolished, followed by foundation and substructure work.
The project will be complete in 2028 with the construction of the superstructure of the westbound Yellowhead Trail bridge, final aspects on both bridges and the removal of temporary cross-overs. Normal Yellowhead Trail operations will resume at this time.
About the Project
The two bridges along 17 Street over Yellowhead Trail have reached the end of their service life and need to be replaced.
The scope of this project includes:
- Replacement of both bridges over Yellowhead Trail
- Repaving along 17 Street between 116 Avenue NW to Hayter Road NW
- Construction of temporary crossovers on Yellowhead Trail (to accommodate construction)
Planning and design is currently underway, with construction anticipated to begin in late summer 2026.
Traffic Impacts
During construction, there may be temporary speed and lane restrictions on Yellowhead Trail, both eastbound and westbound. Please follow the posted signage.
Additionally, traffic intending to use 17 Street will be rerouted via nearby interchanges or temporary crossovers on Yellowhead Trail. Please reference the detour plans below:
- Motorists travelling southbound on 17 Street to Anthony Henday Drive northbound can use the Yellowhead Trail westbound on-ramp and exit at Victoria Trail to immediately access the Yellowhead Trail eastbound on-ramp, continuing east until they reach the Yellowhead Trail exit to Anthony Henday Drive northbound.
- Motorists travelling southbound on the Anthony Henday Drive to south of the 17 Street bridge can take the Highway 16A exit and then turn right onto 17 Street.
- Motorists travelling southbound on 17 Street to Yellowhead Trail eastbound can use the Yellowhead Trail westbound on-ramp and exit at Victoria Trail to immediately access the Yellowhead Trail eastbound.
- Motorists travelling northbound on Anthony Henday Drive to north of the 17 Street Bridge can take the Highway 16 Exit, then immediately access the Highway 16 West On-Ramp to exit at Hayter Road NW.
- Motorists travelling northbound on 17 Street to Yellowhead Trail westbound can turn right onto 116 Avenue, then onto 11 Street to 114 Avenue. Take the first left onto the service road to take the on-ramp to Yellowhead Trail eastbound, then exit at Broadmoor Boulevard to immediately access Yellowhead Trail westbound.
- Motorists travelling westbound on Yellowhead Trail to south of 17 Street bridge can take the Anthony Henday southbound to Highway 16A west then turn right onto 17 Street.
- Motorists travelling eastbound on Yellowhead Trail to north of 17 Street bridge can take the Broadmoor Boulevard exit, then immediately access the on-ramp for westbound on the Yellowhead Trail, then use the Hayter Road NW exit.
