The City is replacing the noise wall on Yellowhead Trail from 97 Street to Fort Road. Construction is anticipated to extend to the end of 2022.

Thank you to those who shared their feedback with the project team from November 12-20, 2020. The survey is now closed. Please check back in 2021 for a What We Heard Report with a summary of community engagement.

The project objectives for the new noise reduction system were informed by local community plans and include:

  • continuing to buffer communities from traffic noise on Yellowhead Trail at noise thresholds below City policy

  • supporting an active mode east-west corridor

  • improved lighting

  • additional green space

  • increasing safety

  • providing a cost-effective solution

Through concept planning, which began in March 2020, the project team investigated a number of noise reduction systems and with the objectives in mind, designed a new and modern noise reduction system.

Proposed Changes

Modern noise reduction systems have the potential to be a feature in the community and along the corridor. The space on the neighbourhood side of the wall is currently used as an informal walking trail and bike path.

The City is proposing to transform the area by moving the wall closer to Yellowhead Trail. This will make room for a landscaped shared-use path along the length of the wall.

The creation of a landscaped shared-use path and amenities addresses a missing connection discussed in the Edmonton Bike Plan and will change the way the community uses the space. The new design also provides more opportunities for active transportation and enhanced community living.

The plan will take an underutilized space and create a welcoming, well lit, active transportation feature that will create a community connection. Added amenities will include lighting, seating and planters.
