The Fleet and Facility Services branch manages the City of Edmonton’s fleet and facility assets. Our team maintains over 5,000 vehicles and equipment, more than 900 City-owned buildings, and over 700 additional infrastructure amenities including park spray decks, splash pads, and river valley footbridges. 

We keep Edmontonians working, moving and thriving by maintaining City assets and providing custodial services to transit buses and shelters, police stations, libraries, corporate vehicles, operational equipment, City-owned recreation centres and buildings. The safety, reliability, maintenance and cleanliness of these assets allow staff and citizens to truly enjoy Edmonton. 

Our Services

Fleet and Facility Services offers services such as facility maintenance, custodial services, vehicle and equipment procurement, fleet engineering, fuel management, fabrication services and fleet safety.

The team supports Edmonton’s Community Energy Transition Strategy through a variety of initiatives including procuring innovative technologies and the Sustainable Fleet Plan.

Facility Maintenance Services

This includes services such as electrical work, roof repair, woodworking (carpentry), locksmith, plumbing and air conditioning repair and maintenance including the Building Automation and Controls system which electronically monitors building equipment for alarms and operational efficiencies. 

This section also provides custodial services for facilities including recreation centres, police stations, libraries, and City-owned office towers. The section also provides energy management support to Facility and Landscape Infrastructure to develop and implement energy conservation programs and initiatives for City facilities to support the goals identified in the City’s environmental strategic plan.

Municipal Fleet Maintenance

City truckMunicipal Fleet Maintenance is responsible for the preventative maintenance, repairs, custom fabrication and seasonal maintenance on all City vehicles and equipment at the City of Edmonton. 

Municipal Fleet Maintenance services a complex and wide variety of vehicles and equipment including fire apparatus, police vehicles, waste trucks, snow plows, lawn mowers, paving machines, ice resurfacing machines, light duty trucks, Paratransit buses and sewer service trucks. 

Within Municipal Fleet Maintenance is Fabrication Technologies, who provide custom fabrication services for the City’s fleet such as sanders and dump trucks. Fabrication Technologies also works on diverse projects including the High Level Bridge guard railings, Hawrelak Park and municipal cemetery entrance gates, outdoor field soccer posts, Churchill Square tree holder, and the Valley Zoo tiger cages. 

Transit Fleet Maintenance

Transit Fleet Maintenance is responsible for the preventative ETS buses parked in garagemaintenance, repairs and daily cleaning of City of Edmonton buses. The section ensures that every day, the bus fleet is safe, reliable, and clean for citizens on their daily commute and transportation needs. 

Transit Fleet Maintenance completes the Mid-Life Refurbishment Strategy which extends the life cycle of a bus from 12 years to 20 years by replacing the engine and updating the interior and exterior of buses. This program ensures buses have the lowest cost of ownership over their lifetime and increases service reliability. Transit Fleet Maintenance supports Edmonton Transit Service in shifting towards environmentally sustainable transportation by introducing one of the largest Electrical Bus Fleets in Canada by 2020.

Client and Vendor Services

Client and Vendor Services ensures internal and external client needs are addressed through service delivery and reporting, capital planning, lifecycle maintenance planning, capital fleet procurement and recoveries. The section also manages vendor activities that ensure best value is passed onto clients through contract negotiations, warranty claims, vendor performance and concessions. Ultimately this section ensures that the Fleet and Facility Services’ delivery model reflects client business needs through standards and service. 

Business Integration

Based on specific and measurable business goals, Fleet and Facility Services works to achieve the standards defined in client service level agreements. Utilizing Key Performance Indicators and Information Technology, processes are constantly improved to deliver real value to clients. Business Integration also manages the City’s fuel services including procurement and monitoring of fuel levels, alternative fuels, emission standards and legislative requirements.

Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) and Enviso

City vehicle being inspectedOccupational Health and Safety (OH&S) has an objective to create a safe and effective work environment by taking a proactive approach to minimize the occurrence of injury and illness to employees. ENVISO is the City’s  environmental management system, and helps to ensure the branch complies with relevant regulations and prevent environmental impacts.

The Safety and Enviso Committee is made up of front-line supervisors, management and worker representatives. The committee’s mandate is to address safety or environmental concerns that arise, find innovative solutions, and take timely action. Occupational Health & Safety and the environment are integral components of how Fleet and Facility Services operates.

Our Achievements

The City of Edmonton won a 2019 Future Fleet Award in the category of Most Innovative Fleet Management Strategy

Fast Thinking: The City of Edmonton’s Fleet Analytics team introduced a tool to assist in the maintenance of the city’s 5,000+ fleet highlighted in LAPV.

The City of Edmonton was named in Government Fleet 2019 Award’s Top 50 Leading Fleets.

The City of Edmonton was featured in Government Fleet's article "How to Collect Reliable Fleet Data & What to Do with It."

The City of Edmonton was named in 2016’s 100 Best Fleets in the America’s.

The City of Edmonton was awarded NAFA’s “FLEXY” Award for “Excellence in Public Safety Fleet” in 2015.
