Have you ever wondered why it’s called Edmonton? Or how your street got its name? From neighbourhoods, parks, streets and avenues, place names are everywhere. Done well, they can help us see ourselves in the fabric of the community. If we look closely, they tell us as much about the time they were implemented as they do about the thing they are supposed to represent.

It turns out this city has a long and contentious history around naming. It's about industry and government, individuals and communities, volunteers and bureaucrats, commemoration and placemaking. Come discover the surprising history behind naming in Edmonton, and learn how we got to where we are today.

Learn the origins of naming in Edmonton.

After the street renumbering saga, Council began taking a interest in naming.

Rapid growth and little oversight led to much confusion around names.

Learn how the Names Advisory Committee was formed.

The City responds, and our street numbering system is born.

Bibliography

This bibliography is designed to situate the records used in the Naming Edmonton virtual exhibit in their larger context. It shows where these disparate records come from by grouping them by creator rather than by subject.

Wherever possible, links to catalogue entries in the City Archives’ online catalogue have been included. There is also further catalogue information in the Reference Room at the City of Edmonton Archives.

For an explanation of terms and acronyms, see our Virtual Exhibit Glossary.
