The City requires contractors, homeowners and individuals to submit application forms for many activities, including residential construction, permits, licensing and more.

General Forms

Cancellations, Refunds, FOIP, Search of Records and Waivers

Cancellation and/or Refund Request Form
An application to request a refund prior to a decision being made or a permit or licence being issued on the following types of jobs: Development Permits, Building Permits, Licence Fees, Plumbing and Gas Permit Fees, Heating and Ventilation Permit Fees, Compliance and Encroachment Fees.

FOIP Application Form
To apply for access to information in the custody or under the control of the City of Edmonton.

Search of Records Request Form
To apply for either plan or file search on a property or building. This request must be made by the owner or by an acting agent on behalf of the owner.

Waiver Form
A legal document between an applicant and the City for the purpose of beginning work on a project prior to the final appeal process.

Residential Construction (Decks, Garage, Demolition and More)

Residential Construction Application Form
An application for approval regarding development or construction projects on a residential property/building that include:

  • Additions
  • Basement developments (no secondary suite)
  • Covered deck/patio
  • Demolition
  • Detached carport
  • Gazebo or pergola
  • Hot tub
  • Interior alterations
  • Ponds
  • Sheds
  • Solid fuel burning appliance (wood, pellet, coal)
  • Sunroom
  • Swimming pool
  • Uncovered Deck Uncovered Deck under 6 feet Construction Design Form

Garage Application Form
An application for the construction of a detached garage.

Residential Demolition Form
An application form used to remove standing structures such as a house or garage.
Properties listed on the Inventory of Historic Resources in Edmonton will be required to submit additional information as per Section 14.12 of the Zoning Bylaw.

Secondary Suite
An application to apply for a new secondary suite within an existing structure, including suites that are existing without permits.

New Home Construction

New House Permit Application Form
Application form for Single Detached House, Semi-detached House, Duplex, Row House (3 or 4 units), or Garden Suite. Refer to the New House Permit Application Guide for required items and supporting documentation for this application.

Secondary Suite for an Existing Single Family Home Application Form 
An application to apply for permits to build either a new secondary suite into an existing single family home or to apply for permits for a secondary suite that has already been built without permits into an existing single family home.

Abandoned Wells Confirmation Form
Any new subdivision or select Development Permit application require this form as part of the main application. For select Development Permit, any new building that will be larger than 47 sq m (506 sq ft), or an addition to or an alteration of an existing building that will result in the building being larger than 47 sq m (506 sq ft) must include this form with the application package. 

Footing and Foundation ONLY Building Permit Form
For use in conjunction with an application for New House Permit. This is an optional request for an expedited building permit for construction of the foundation and main floor deck of the project.

The permit holder assumes all risks, as the final building permit for the project has not yet been issued. Code references are to Division B of the Alberta Building Code 2014.

Asbestos Abatement and Utilities Disconnection Form
If you are demolishing any residential structure(s) 10 sq m or larger, you will need to submit this form with the application package.

Construction Site Management Acknowledgement Form
City of Edmonton’s requirements and guidelines for best construction practices for demolition or new construction of residential infill development.

Commercial, Industrial and Multi-Residential Construction

Commercial Development Permit Application Form
This form must be filled for any new commercial business application or change in existing business operations. Submit your application with the following documentation:

Commercial Industrial Checklist - This checklist is required for construction projects for new buildings and additions

Multi-Unit Residential Checklist - This checklist is required for construction projects consisting of 3 or more dwellings for new apartment/condominium buildings/row housing, stacked row housing.

Change of Use Checklist - This checklist is required when changing the use within an existing building or site (for example: changing a General Retail Store to a Restaurant)

Child Care Services Checklist - This checklist is required when applying for a commercial development permit for child care services.

Commercial Building Permit Application and  Guide to Completing Commercial Building Application This application is required for any new commercial or industrial construction. (If you are doing interior alterations or tenant improvements to existing commercial space, you may use the following Short-Form. 

Commercial Building Permit Application for Interior Alterations (Short-Form)
This application is for interior alterations/tenant improvements to existing floor and mezzanine areas, and miscellaneous work in and around commercial buildings.

Street Vending Application Form
Application form for a street vending permit. Applicants should consult our vending permit page before submitting their application.

Sidewalk Café Application Form

Electrical Permit Application Form - Contractors
An application form for an electrical permit being applied for by a Electrical Contractor.

Electrical Permit Application Form - Homeowner
An application form to apply for an electrical permit when a homeowner is doing their own electrical work.

Electrical Permit Annual Application Form
For contractors and owners of commercial buildings.

Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC)

Heating and Ventilation Application Form - Contractors
To apply for approval to install or alter heating and ventilation equipment.

Heating and Ventilation Application Form - Homeowner
Single family homeowners who apply for this permit are required to own and reside at the property and be doing the work themselves. Homeowner applications must be done in person at our office. Faxed or mailed applications from homeowners will not be accepted.

GeoExchange System Application Form
A GeoExchange System, commonly known as a Geothermal System, is a network of piping in the ground with a closed loop fluid circulation that allows for heat transfer between a building HVAC system and the ground. GeoExchange systems can improve the energy efficiency of building heating and cooling systems.

The GeoExchange System Installation Application form provides the City of Edmonton with sufficient information about the proposed GeoExchange system to ensure building code and industry best practice compliance of any buildings it may connect to.

Plumbing and Gas

Plumbing and Gas Application Form - Contractors
To apply for approval to install or alter plumbing and gas equipment.

Plumbing and Gas Application Form - Homeowner
Single family homeowners who apply for this permit must own and reside in the residence and be doing the work themselves. Homeowners can only apply for gas permits for existing homes. They are not allowed to submit a gas permit for work being done in a new single family home. All applications will be required to provide a detailed drawing including pipe sizing for the work they are doing. Faxed or mailed applications from homeowners will not be accepted.

Private Sewage Disposal System Application Form
An application for a sewage disposal system for new homes and for system replacements for older homes.

Sewer and Water Application Form
To apply for approval to install or alter sewer and water equipment.

Contractor Change Request Form
An application to request a change of a contractor on permits.

Re-inspection Request Form
Application form used to pay for fees when a re-inspection is required. These fees must be paid before the re-inspection can be done.

Working Drawing Submission Form
Form to be filled out when submitting new or revised working drawings.

 

Permanent and Temporary Sign Forms

Permanent Signs

Permanent Sign Application Form
To apply for approval of the placement of a permanent sign on a property.

Applicants should consult the City's permanent signs page for more information about application requirements. 

Temporary Signs

Apply online for Temporary On-Premises Signs (online applications preferred)

Temporary On-premises Sign
To apply for approval to place a Temporary On-premises Sign on a property.

Temporary On-premises Signs means any sign that is relocatable or removable from a site and used for advertising of a limited duration. The copy on such a sign identifies or advertises a business, activity, product, service or entertainment located on the premises or site where the sign is displayed.


Temporary Off-premises Sign
To apply for approval to place a Temporary Off-premises Sign on a property.

Landowner/Agent Permission Letter: Applications for all signs shall include a letter from the owner of the property on which the sign is to be erected, or his agent, authorizing the applicant's sign development.

Temporary Off-premises Signs means any sign that is relocatable or removable from a site and used for advertising of a limited duration. The copy on such a sign directs attention to a business, activity, product, service or entertainment that cannot be considered as the principal products sold nor a principal business, activity, entertainment or service provided on the premises or site where the sign is displayed.

Other Zoning and Development Forms

Compliance Certificate, Encroachment, Leave as Built and Zoning Confirmation

Compliance Certificate Application
An application for confirmation that all construction and location of the construction has permits and approvals.

Change a Compliance Request from Regular to Express service
To change the Compliance service from Regular to Express, please email developmentservices@edmonton.ca. The fee calculation is the difference between regular and express.

Encroachment Application Form
To apply for approval allowing a building or structure to continue to be located on or over City property.

Leave as Built Application Form
A confirmation by the City that applies to buildings that had appropriate development permits issued, but the building was built in a different location than what was approved.

Zoning Confirmation Application Form
An application to confirm the zoning of a particular property.

Business Licensing

Commercial Location Business Licence Application Form
To apply for approval to operate a business on a commercial site. Business Licence applications are reviewed to see if a Development Permit is also required.

Home-Based Business Application Form
An application for approval to operate a business from your residential property.

Non Resident Business Application Form
This application form is to be filled out by businesses that do not have a permanent base of operations in either a Home or Commercial location within Edmonton but are working in the City.

Travelling/Temporary Sales Business Licence Application Form
To apply for a Travelling/Temporary Sales business licence.

Business Licence Cancellation Form
Form used to cancel a business licence.

Vehicle for Hire

Vehicle for Hire Driver's Licence Application Form
Application to renew or for new Vehicle for Hire (Taxi, Limousine and Shuttle) Driver's licences.

Business Licence Application for Dispatchers
Application for Taxis Shuttle or Limousine Service and Private Transportation Providers(PTP).

Taxi Plate Transfer Application Form
Apply to have a taxi plate transferred to a Class A taxi licence holder's name.

Parking Permits

Residential Parking Permit and Visitor Passes

Residential Parking Permit and Visitor Pass Application Form
An application for approval to allow a vehicle parking (vehicle must be under 4500 KG in weight) in a restricted residential area.
