These suites can provide Edmontonians with housing options at a lower cost than other types of rental units, and opportunities to live in a variety of neighbourhoods. They can also act as a mortgage helper for homeowners by providing them with rental income.

What is a Secondary Suite?

A secondary suite is a self-contained dwelling within or attached to a single detached, semi-detached, duplex or row house. It has separate cooking, sleeping and bathroom facilities. A secondary suite can be created through the conversion or development of a basement or other interior space. 

Where Are They Allowed?

Secondary suites can be created in most residential zones of the city, although specific development regulations apply. In most low-density residential zones they are considered to be a permitted use, while in other residential zones they are considered to be a discretionary use.
