Improvements to 107 Avenue, from 101 Street to 122 Street, will help enhance community connections.
Feedback from our public and stakeholder engagement meetings was taken into consideration when creating our draft concept plan for the 107 Avenue Revitalization project.
107 Avenue is a significant commercial roadway intersecting several communities in Edmonton. The Central MacDougall/Queen Mary Park segment of 107 Avenue is described by some within the community as where the world meets in Edmonton.
107 Avenue acts as a main street in the area, populated by businesses, services and multi-unit residences. The area is rich in character, welcoming generations of newcomers to Edmonton and provides the community with a strong cross-cultural influence.
Improvements to 107 Avenue have been identified through the Neighbourhood Revitalization Program. A comprehensive Urban Design Analysis for the communities was completed and shared with Edmontonians in February 2017. Following extensive consultation with a variety of community stakeholders, this analysis suggested improvements that would support the overarching goals of the program which include:
The project area is from 101 Street to 122 Street within Queen Mary Park (west of 109 Street) and Central McDougall (east of 109 Street).
The top 4 initiatives from the Urban Design Analysis will be designed through the 107 Avenue Revitalization Project:
This initiative will explore landscaping opportunities, areas for street furniture and possible pedestrian-oriented lighting (road and curb replacement is not a part of this project).
We heard that greening, lighting and local art were the most important items to consider. Lighting was seen to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere while contributing to safety in the area. People especially welcomed the idea of ‘pedestrian lights’—lights that shine on the pedestrian realm of the sidewalk as well as the roadway.
The alleys along 107 Avenue are unique, with each block intersected by an alleyway entrance. This project will identify one alley to animate and design to create a welcoming space. The project team will be using Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles while providing opportunities to program the alley for events.
Each block along 107 Avenue has an alley entrance mid-block. We heard that lighting, greening, local art and programmable space were key aspects to include. People were excited about the possibility of enhancing alley space. As a result of this enthusiasm, 2 more alleyways were included in the plan.
Gateway Elements are unique entrance features used to define the neighbourhood and are specific to each community. These gateway features are intended to visually welcome people to the area and create visual connections between the neighbourhoods, 107 Avenue and the downtown area.
We heard that iconic features that included lighting and celebrated 107 Avenue’s rich multi-culture history were desirable. People also wanted the gateway elements to be linear and attract attention along the avenue.
Concept plan for a public park at 10425 107 Avenue that could be considered for construction in the future. We heard the park must include the infrastructure needed for the space to be programmed by the community. Seating, good lighting and greening were also seen as important. Large art installations that could be used for other purposes, like play or seating, would attract people to the park.
The 107 Avenue Revitalization Project is funded through the Neighbourhood Revitalization Program. Streetscape upgrades, gateway elements and alley improvements are for design and construction. The public space is currently funded for concept design. The potential art park will be considered for construction in the future.
A comprehensive engagement process will be undertaken to understand opportunities and issues and to learn what residents, stakeholders and the public think about location, design and other critical elements for the 4 initiatives.
We look forward to connecting with you and hearing your perspectives as we move toward creating the neighbourhood design for 107 Avenue's future.

A stakeholder advisory group, made up of neighbourhood residents as well as representatives from area businesses, groups and organizations, will be formed. This group will provide local knowledge and share ideas on the best way to engage with the community specifically on the 107 Avenue Revitalization Project.
Thank you to everyone who participated in our online engagement activities in December.
Your input will be considered alongside City plans and policies as we finalize the concept plan.
Public and stakeholder engagement took place between June and August 2021. We heard hundreds of ideas from community members, area residents, businesses and community groups. See the What We Heard Report.
The top priorities for the project include lighting, greening, seating and colourful elements.
Thank you for joining the Virtual Ideas Workshops on June 23 and 26. Participants were provided an overview of the project and ideas for the streetscape opportunities, alley pilot, gateway features and the art park for their feedback.
Input received at the events and the online survey will help shape the design for each element. Further public opportunities to view the designs and share feedback will be available later this year.
