Using Your Carts in Winter
From November 9 - March 25, food scraps carts will be collected once every two weeks, to make it easier and safer for you to set out your carts. No need to shovel a spot for two carts, you will only need to put out one cart a week! Food scraps carts will be collected on the opposite week of the garbage carts.
In cold weather, food scraps may freeze to the inside of your cart. This is normal! If you see frozen scraps in your cart after collection, please do not report it as a missed collection. Use a broom or shovel handle to loosen items so the cart empties easily.
To ensure your food scraps are emptied on collection day:
- Store your food scraps cart outdoors between collections. Liquid can collect and freeze when the cart is stored indoors.
- Strain liquid from watery food scraps before placing them in the cart.
- Pre-freeze food scraps in your freezer before putting them inside your cart.
- Use BPI/BNQ certified compostable bags.
