This application is to request approval for a new temporary portable sign location associated with the Road Right-of-Way Portable Signs Program.

For temporary on-premises signs and temporary off-premises signs located on private property please follow the Development Permit application process for Private Property Temporary Signs.

Please fill out the application form below. You will also need to submit the following:

Proposed temporary portable sign location plan
Photographs of the proposed temporary portable sign location
Non-refundable application fee of $100 per sign location that is requested

Content Requirements

Eligibility

Applicants must have active registration with the Government of Alberta, Corporation Registration System (CORES) or are listed with the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) as an active charity. Organizations include:

Community Association - a non-governmental association of participating members of a community, such as a neighbourhood, condominium, cooperative, or group of homeowners or property owners in a delineated geographic area
School - a structured learning environment through which an education program is offered to a student by way of the Alberta School Act
Society - means a society incorporated or continued under the Alberta Societies Act and not discontinued, including:
- Philanthropic organizations or charities
- Sport or recreation clubs
- Faith-based organizations
- Arts, literary cultural groups
- Volunteer organizations
- Science, agriculture, environmental, or educational organizations
- Other useful purposes but not for the purpose of carrying on a trade or business
Alberta Approved Farmers’ Markets - is one that has been approved by the Alberta Approved Farmers' Market Program and as such meets the requirements of the program guidelines that have been approved by the Minister.

Content Requirements

The information being advertised is limited to:

The details of a community event that positively impacts local community spirit and occurs within the City of Edmonton, or
Be related to a charitable cause that is of broad interest to the local community

Permit Approval Process

Permits for pre-approved locations are issued by the City to the sign companies and the organizations they work with. Sign companies submit all permit applications through the City’s online application portal.

Locations

Portable signs for organizations are only allowed at pre-approved locations designated as Non-Profit Sign Locations.

Temporary Portable Signs on Private Property

This program does not address portable signs on private property. The use of portable signs on titled lands is governed by Zoning Bylaw 20001. For more information, please visit Temporary Signs on private property.

Application Requirements

This application is to request approval for a new temporary portable sign location associated with the Road Right-of-Way Portable Signs Program.

For temporary on-premises signs and temporary off-premises signs located on private property please follow the Development Permit application process for Private Property Temporary Signs.

Please fill out the application form below. You will also need to submit the following:

A Proposed Temporary Portable Sign Location Plan that illustrates the proposed sign location relative to the existing curbs and property lines and identifies distances from the curbs and any major landmarks. Base maps including curb and property line information are available from the City at Maps and Aerial Products. Fees may apply.
Photographs of the proposed temporary portable sign location from all four directions. If possible the photo should include a temporary marker (such as, a pylon or similar surface-mounted device) identifying the preferred sign location.
The non-refundable application fee in the form of a cheque in the amount of $100.00 payable to the City of Edmonton. We cannot accept online payments. Please mail the cheque for the application fee to:

Please allow a minimum of 14 working days to process, review and render a decision on the application.

Sign Location Guidelines

Please note when the City is approving a new temporary portable sign location the following guidelines apply.

Sign locations must not:

Be within 5 metres of a fire hydrant or similar firefighting connection
Be within 1.5 metres from any streetlight pole
Interfere with access to any utility service grate, maintenance hole, vault, pole, or other equipment
Be within 3 metres from any curb
Be within 1 metre of the edge of any sidewalk, walkway, or shared use path
Be within 15 metres of any driveway access to private property
Be within 25 metres of the corner of a controlled or uncontrolled intersection or marked pedestrian crosswalk
Be upon any centre medians, traffic islands, traffic circle islands or any other median that is less than 9 metres in width
Be within the sight triangle for the traffic control condition at the location
Be within 100 metres of a high collision location identified by Safe Mobility
Not be in direct view of a residential property front entrance

Temporary portable sign locations will not be approved where the zoning of the adjacent property prohibits temporary on-premises signs.

A location can be denied, closed or reopened should conditions change at a location and the City reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to approve a location that does not meet these guidelines subject to detailed review and assessment of the site and the operational and safety circumstances therein.
