When we find a litter of tiny kittens, our good-hearted instincts tell us to rush to the aid of these fragile felines. Thankfully, just like a baby hare, human intervention is typically not required. The best thing you can do is leave them alone and wait for mom to return until they are self-sufficient. It is important that kittens remain with mom as long as possible because she offers the best chance of survival.
If mom does not return within eight hours, or they are not self-sufficient, they need your help. Not to worry though, there are many options to save them.

If you can look after them until they are eight weeks old, the Animal Care & Control Centre has partnered with the Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) on a program that helps provide you with free supplies and training for you to foster them. Once self-sufficient, EHS will provide vaccinations, spay neuter surgeries, a microchip and place the kitten up for adoption. If you are interested in adopting, EHS can help with that too.
If you are sure that these kittens are orphaned, they can be brought to ACCC by appointment, admitted and potentially placed into a foster program based on their size, health and availability. Once self sufficient, we will provide vaccinations, spay neuter surgeries, a microchip and find a new home through an adoption partner. If you are interested in adopting a kitten at that time, a special consideration will be placed on the file so you are first in line.
If the kittens are walking, playing and eating on their own, they can be brought to ACCC by appointment. If you find a newborn kitten, younger than two months old, don’t rush to their rescue, keep your eyes open for their mom, as she me be close by, and she is their best chance for survival. Newborn kittens require around the clock care including regular bottle feeding.
