large sports field with city skyline in background

The City of Edmonton is proud of its vast parkland and works hard to maintain its biodiversity. Through care and proper preservation practices, it can continue to be enjoyed by all.

The City evaluated its turf and horticulture inventory and service levels with the aim of making adjustments in order to more effectively maintain the landscape with existing resources. Service levels for each type of inventory are displayed below.

Plant and Shrub Service Levels

Flower Programs, Flower Beds and Shrub Beds

The budget for city-funded annual flower programs, such as in-ground flower beds, hanging baskets and planters, has been discontinued and all city-funded flower work has ended.

  • In some cases, where budget is available, beds may be converted to turf, shrub beds, tree planting areas or perennial flower beds which take less work to care for than annual flower beds
  • Flowers paid for by third-party clients or flowers planted and cared for by community groups are currently continuing and have not been impacted. This includes:
    • Fire Stations
    • ETS Facilities
    • Commonwealth Stadium
    • As part of citywide large events and festivals
    • Flower beds planted and cared for by Homeowners Associations, Community Leagues or other community groups
    • Flower beds and programs maintained by the Centre City Program and funded through downtown vibrancy
    • Flower beds planted and cared for by Registered Partners in Parks members
  • For the 2026 season, a one-time expenditure has been made to fund annual flower displays at specific cenotaphs while a long-term strategy is finalized. Materials, maintenance and watering will occur in 2026 at these locations:
    • Beverly Cenotaph
    • Light Horse Park Memorial Cenotaph
    • Flanders Poppy Garden, Griesbach
    • Cenotaph Memorial Plaza, maintained by Centre City and funded by the Downtown Economy
    • Beechmount Cemetery Cenotaph, continues to be maintained by City Cemeteries

Roadway and Neighbourhood Park Shrub Beds

These shrub beds are located in roadways, parks and neighbourhoods.

  • These areas receive 2 manual weed control cycles this year
  • Pruning shrubs during the summer months only occurs as required to address sight line obstructions for safety and encroachment for accessibility
Dandelions

The City embraces our natural environment. Dandelions are a part of our natural backdrop and are an early food source for wildlife and pollinators. Only high-profile areas will be maintained to a manicured level. Herbicides are applied to sports fields only when weed populations impact playability or player safety.

Parks and Trail Servicing

Litter Collection

During the summer months, May to October, litter is removed from garbage cans in parks and trails twice per week.

During the winter months, November to April, litter is removed once per week.

Trail Maintenance

Trails are swept in spring to remove gravel, sand and debris. During the spring and summer, trails are swept periodically if excess debris or sand is present.
