Neighbourhood and Alley Renewal construction is underway in Gariepy.

Construction Update - August 2024

Gariepy Neighbourhood Renewal consists of reconstruction and paving of the roads and removal and replacement of public sidewalks, curbs, gutters and street lighting.

Construction began in May 2024 in the 2024 area and is progressing on schedule. The construction on the sidewalks is almost complete, with only the west side of 174 Street from 53 Avenue to 57 Avenue remaining.

The reconstruction of the roadways has also started on Lessard Drive (the loop and the cul-de-sacs). The remaining road reconstruction is on schedule to be completed in September.

The landscaping behind the renewal work is being handled by a separate contractor with work scheduled to start shortly. Sod will be placed depending on weather and timelines. Not all areas may receive sod before the end of the season. Areas that don’t receive sod in 2024 will be landscaped when construction resumes in 2025.

Local Improvement Options

A Local Improvement is a construction project undertaken near or adjacent to residents’ properties which is considered more beneficial to the property owner and local area than to the City as a whole. These include upgrades to street lights and sidewalks.

Residents in Gariepy chose not to pursue decorative street lights, but had the opportunity to participate in the sidewalk Local Improvement decision.

Property owners were mailed a local improvement package dated January 31, 2024 which included information about the sidewalk reconstruction Local Improvement and a form for those who wished to petition against. The 30-day petition period has since expired. Since the City did not receive majority (50% +1) petitions against the Local Improvement, sidewalk reconstruction will take place in all project areas over 2 years of construction for the neighbourhood.

Decorative Street Blades

As part of the Gariepy Neighbourhood Renewal, the community has the option to receive decorative street blades throughout the neighbourhood at no additional cost to property owners.

Gariepy residents voted at the Preparing for Construction event and online and selected Option 2.

Local Improvements

About the Project

Neighbourhood Renewal rehabilitates residential roads, replaces street lights, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, and adds missing sidewalk links, where possible. Other opportunities to improve how people walk, bike, roll, drive and gather in the neighbourhood, and how they enjoy City-owned parks and open spaces are also explored.

Alley Renewal will be included as part of the Gariepy neighbourhood reconstruction. Alley Renewal involves alley reconstruction and repaving, improvements to surface drainage where possible, and upgrading of existing alley lighting to LED fixtures. Utility assessments and repairs, along with removals and pruning of trees and shrubs, are also completed.

A series of public events will be scheduled by the project team which will give residents the opportunity to build a project vision and guiding principles together and provide regular feedback on the different stages of the project including design.

Cost sharing opportunities will be made available through the local improvement process for upgrades in the neighbourhood. Arterial roads are not included in the scope of work.

The Building Great Neighbourhoods project team are genuinely interested guests, stepping into your neighbourhood like a visitor in your home. We want to learn and appreciate how you live and what you value in your community. Through public engagement, we will gain an understanding about what you need and value in your neighbourhood.

We seek to involve you in decision-making to shape the vision for engagement and neighbourhood improvements. Working together, we can make the most out of your neighbourhood.

How to Get Involved

We have created a road map to help you and your neighbours understand the steps of the renewal process and how you can participate. At each step we will tell you what the purpose is and how your input will inform the decisions being made. We commit to report back on how we used your input.

Concept Phase

The Concept phase is when we need to hear from you the most! We need your help to co-create a vision and guiding principles, explore opportunities, and explore options and tradeoffs. These are the most important pieces for your Neighbourhood Renewal and will be used to create a draft design to best meet your neighbourhood needs.

Design Phase

During the Design phase, we want your input on the refined designs for your neighbourhood. Your feedback will be incorporated into the final design, alongside technical requirements and City policies. These designs were created from the vision and guiding principles we co-created together. You shared your input, we incorporated your feedback, now we build!

Build Phase

During the Build phase, we want to hear your concerns about how construction may affect your private property.

Community Feedback on Final Design - October 2023

Thank you to everyone who engaged with the Project Team during the Community Feedback on Final Design stage of Gariepy Neighbourhood and Alley Renewal. The online survey closed on October 8, but you can still review the final design.

The public engagement activities and participation are summarized in the Engagement Summary.

The What We Heard report for the Community Feedback on Draft Design stage is also ready. We are committed to using the feedback from the previous stage to shape the final design for Gariepy.

Your feedback will be considered as we finalize the design for Gariepy Neighbourhood and Alley Renewal. We will be reaching out to you again in spring 2024 as we enter the Preparing for Construction stage of Neighbourhood Renewal.

In fall 2022, we were in the Exploring Options and Tradeoffs stage of Neighbourhood and Alley Renewal where we shared design features and explained the tradeoffs of those options. The What We Heard Report (12MB) for that stage is now available.

Project Update - October 2022

The Gariepy Project Team has been working to come up with a set of options for renewing Gariepy’s roads, sidewalks, alleys, street lights and open spaces, using the input you provided us in the spring. We are now weighing these options with the associated tradeoffs.
