Project Update - February 2024

Thank you to everyone who engaged with the Project Team during the Learning and Exploring Opportunities stage of 124 Street Business Improvement Area (BIA) Alley Renewal. The drop-in event was hosted on February 1 and the online survey closed on February 12. We appreciate everyone who took the time to learn about the project and provide valuable feedback about how you experience alleys in the 124 Street BIA (see which alleys are included on the  scope map ).

The public engagement activities and participation are summarized in the Engagement Summary.

A What We Heard Report summarizing your feedback will be available later in 2024.

In spring 2024, we will be in touch with more details and information about Alley Renewal design plans for 124 Street BIA.

Alley Renewal: Overview

About the Project

Alley Renewal involves alley reconstruction and repaving, improvements to surface drainage where possible, exploring opportunities to improve traffic safety and active mode connections (for walking, rolling and biking), and upgrading existing alley lighting to LED fixtures.

If property owners are interested, there is an opportunity for a local improvement to add alley lighting. Utility assessments and repairs, along with removals and pruning of trees and shrubs, are also completed.

Business Improvement Areas

City Council has prioritized renewing alleys and front streets in Edmonton’s 13 Business Improvement Areas (BIAs). This renewal is separate from the neighbourhood they are located in. The 124 Street BIA Alley Renewal project may also slightly extend beyond the 124 Street and Area BIA boundary in order to fully complete a block or alley, which is necessary for design and construction.

City Council has committed to completing the BIA Alley Renewal work by the end of 2030. For more information, read the Council Report.
