Where We Are
The Valley Line West LRT project is in the Build phase and construction is well underway. The project entered into procurement on January 7, 2020. The Request for Qualifications (RFQ) closed on February 24, 2020. On March 13, 2020, the City shortlisted 3 teams to participate in the Request for Proposal (RFP) phase of procurement. On December 23, 2020, the City reached financial close with Marigold Infrastructure Partners, which was selected as the preferred proponent to design, build and partially finance the $2.6-billion Valley Line West LRT.

The 2025 construction season focused on an accelerated roadwork plan to complete roadwork at key intersections and along corridors, bringing them into their final permanent traffic configurations. This approach reduced long-term disruption for commuters, businesses, schools and communities. MIP crews reopened all intersections on or ahead of schedule.
Valley Line West reached a major milestone as the final concrete segment was installed for the elevated guideway along 87 Avenue. A massive, 400-tonne gantry crane was used to lift and place 60-tonne pre-cast concrete segments – which were built in Blackfalds, Alberta – onto 46 Y-shaped piers, forming the nearly two-kilometre guideway that will carry trains between the Misericordia Hospital and West Edmonton Mall elevated stations.

Before being used on Valley Line West, the gantry crane was used to build some of the infrastructure for Expo 2020 in Dubai. From there, it was shipped to Vancouver and travelled by train to Edmonton.
A plan to accelerate Valley Line West roadwork in key areas was given the go-ahead by City Council’s Urban Planning Committee on February 11, 2025, with the goal of completing the majority of the roadwork in 2025.
A three-phased approach from April to November impacted several major intersections and corridors, including:
Phase 1:
- 104 Avenue (105 Street to 121 Street)
- Stony Plain Road at 124 Street (full closure)
- Stony Plain Road at 156 Street (partial closure)
- 87 Avenue at Meadowlark Road (partial closure)
Phase 2:
- 104 Avenue (105 Street to 121 Street)
- Stony Plain Road at 142 Street (partial closure)
- 95 Avenue at 156 Street (partial closure)
Phase 3:
- 104 Avenue (105 Street to 121 Street)
- Stony Plain Road at 149 Street (partial closure)

Valley Line West Roadway Construction Options and Impacts Report - February 2025
In 2024, construction activity shifted further into the downtown core, where MIP crews relocated utility lines and completed drainage work, as well as built sidewalks, curbs, roads, gutters and retaining walls. Roadwork continued across the alignment with a focus on maintaining vehicle and pedestrian access. Stony Plain Road between 131 Street and 139 Street, along with the Stony Plain Road bridge over Groat Road, reopened to vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
On November 30, 2024, Stony Plain Road between 129 Street and 139 Street, and the new Stony Plain Road Bridge over Groat Road reopened to vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The new Stony Plain Road Bridge was reconstructed to accommodate LRT tracks in the middle, one lane of vehicle traffic in each direction and a shared-use path.
The first segment of track on Valley Line West was installed in July 2024, along Stony Plain Road at 139 Street.
MIP installed several steel girders on the new LRT bridge that will cross Anthony Henday Drive in west Edmonton. The work was captured by MIP in this timelapse video.
In 2023, MIP crews demolished the existing Stony Plain Road bridge over Groat Road and lifted steel girders into place for the new bridge. Construction also progressed on the new LRT bridge over Anthony Henday Drive, while the elevated guideway near West Edmonton Mall began to take shape with the installation of piers. A gantry crane was also introduced to support the elevated guideway construction.
In 2022, construction ramped up across the Valley Line West LRT alignment. MIP crews advanced utility relocations, early civil works and key project elements along the corridor, marking the first full year of coordinated construction and community outreach following project launch. Construction began on the Lewis Farms Storage Facility and the Gerry Wright Operations and Maintenance Facility, and preliminary work started on the approaches to the LRT bridge over Anthony Henday Drive.
Work to demolish and remove the Stony Plain Road Bridge over Groat Road took place over 6 days in late December 2022 and early January 2023. The demolition of the existing bridge, captured in this video by MIP, was necessary to build a new bridge to accommodate trains, vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. The demolition and removal of the bridge involved extensive collaboration between various crews to safely dismantle the bridge components and clear them from the area.
The City of Edmonton and Marigold Infrastructure Partners celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony at Lewis Farms Transit Centre on May 27, 2022, commemorating one full year of construction. Members of the federal, provincial and municipal governments were on hand to celebrate the exciting milestone.
In 2021, early construction began on the Valley Line West LRT, marking the transition from planning and design to active construction along the alignment. MIP crews initiated major construction activities, including utility relocations, site preparation and early structural work, laying the foundation for the 14-kilometre line connecting downtown to west Edmonton.
