Waste Services offers two programs for residents looking to share carts with other homes on their property. This reduces the amount of space required to set out carts for collection.
Many Edmonton properties with curbside (cart) collection have multiple dwellings. These include secondary suites, like basement suites, or individual homes, like row homes and backyard homes. Each dwelling receives its own set of carts and is charged its own monthly utility rate.
Two cart sharing programs exist for these properties: Food Scraps Cart Sharing is available to any property that has more than one dwelling, while Secondary Suite Cart Sharing is specific to properties with registered secondary suites. Properties may be enrolled in only one program at a time.
This program allows two dwellings on the same property to share one large 240L food scraps cart instead of having one 120L food scraps cart each. There is no change to the monthly utility rate.
To Apply:
- The two dwellings must be on the same property. They may include a secondary suite (such as a basement suite) or separate home (such as a backyard home or neighbouring row home)
- You must be an EPCOR account holder
- You will need your EPCOR account number (the 8-digit number on your EPCOR bill)
Please note:
- If the dwelling you are requesting to share with has a separate EPCOR account (they pay their own bill), then both dwellings need to submit an application within 5 days of each other
- Homes enrolled in the Secondary Suite Cart Sharing Program are not eligible to share a food scraps cart
- Either dwelling can cancel participation in the program by calling 311
This program is for homes with a registered secondary suite, such as a basement suite, that produce a small amount of waste. It allows the primary home to share one set of carts with its secondary suite(s) and pay one monthly waste utility rate. One set of carts includes one garbage cart (120L or 240L) and one 120L food scraps cart.
To Apply:
- Your home must have one or more registered secondary suites
- You must be an EPCOR account holder
- You will need your EPCOR account number (the 8-digit number on your EPCOR bill)
Please note:
- If your suite has a separate EPCOR account (they receive their own bill), list both accounts on the application form and designate one as the primary account. This account will be billed the full waste utility rate each month. It cannot be split between two accounts.
- Homes enrolled in the Excess Garbage Cart Program (360L garbage cart) or Food Scraps Cart Sharing Program are not eligible to share carts
- Your utility rate savings will take effect the day after we remove your extra set of carts
- If your property’s EPCOR account holder changes, your property’s participation in the program automatically ends. The new account holder will need to reapply for the program, or an additional set of carts will be delivered to each suite.
- You can cancel your participation in the program anytime by calling 311
Missing a set of carts?
Each dwelling on a property should receive its own set of garbage and food scraps carts, unless it is participating in a cart-sharing program.
Secondary Suite
If you have a secondary suite but have not received a second set of carts, you will need to register your secondary suite. This starts with obtaining development approval for your suite. Please contact 311 or visit the Secondary Suites page for more information.
If your suite is already registered with the City via Development Services and you have not received carts, it is possible that your secondary suite has not been registered with EPCOR. Please contact our Waste Customer Support team at wastesupport@edmonton.ca for assistance.
Additional home
If you have a newly constructed home, such as a backyard home, that has not received its own set of carts, please make sure it has been registered with EPCOR. See carts for new homes for more information, or contact wastesupport@edmonton.ca for assistance.
