Properties with curbside collection who have more than one unit can reduce the amount of space required for waste collection by sharing carts.
There are two programs available: Secondary Suite Cart Sharing and Food Scraps Cart Sharing. Properties eligible for both programs can only be enrolled in one at a time.
The Secondary Suite Cart Sharing program is for property owners with a registered secondary suite who generate minimal waste between two dwellings. This program allows for a primary and secondary suite to share one set of standard-sized carts and pay one monthly waste utility rate.
To Apply:
- You must be an EPCOR account holder
- You will need your EPCOR account number (the 8-digit number on your EPCOR bill)
Please note:
- Backyard homes are not secondary suites and require separate applications for cart sharing
- If a property is already participating in the program and their EPCOR account holder changes, the property’s participation will automatically end. The new account holder will need to reapply for the program.
- If your suite has a separate EPCOR account (they receive their own bill), you will need to list both accounts on the application form and designate one as the primary account. The primary account will be billed the full waste utility rate each month (it cannot be split between two accounts).
- Only 120L food scraps carts and 240L garbage carts are eligible for the cart sharing program. Residents who are on the excess waste program are not eligible for cart sharing.
The Food Scraps Cart Sharing program reduces the number of carts on a property by allowing for two dwellings on the same property to share one larger food scraps cart (240 L) instead of having one 120L food scraps cart per unit. This program does not result in a change in monthly waste utility rate.
To Apply:
- You must be an EPCOR account holder
- You will need your EPCOR account number (the 8-digit number on your EPCOR bill)
Please note:
- If the unit you are requesting to share with has a separate EPCOR account, then both units must submit an application to consent to the program. Either unit can opt out at any time.
Haven’t received your second set of carts?
If you have a secondary suite but have not received a second set of carts, you will need to register your secondary suite. This starts with obtaining development approval for your suite. Please contact 311 or visit the Secondary Suites page for more information.
If your suite is already registered with the City via Development Services and you have not received carts, it is possible that your secondary suite has not been registered with EPCOR. Please call our Waste Customer Support team at 780-496-5698 for assistance.
