Canada Day (July 1) marks the anniversary of Confederation and also offers us time to learn, reflect, commit to understanding the truth and move ahead towards reconciliation.

The City of Edmonton acknowledges the traditional land on which we reside is in Treaty 6 Territory. We do this to create awareness that we are all treaty members, and to show recognition and respect for Indigenous Peoples and the traditional territories in which we live and work.

Cautions For and During Fireworks

North-South Pedestrian Bridge Access

The following pedestrian access across the North Saskatchewan River will be unavailable from 9:45pm until 30 minutes after the fireworks:

  • High Level Bridge
  • 109 Street southbound, from 97 Avenue/ High Level Bridge to 87 Avenue
  • Menzies Bridge

Pedestrian access across the river will be available via the Groat Road Bridge, James Macdonald Bridge, Walterdale Bridge and the Low Level Bridge.

Watercraft

Watercraft may be taken out on the river to view the fireworks. A portion of the river to the north of the launch zone at Kinsmen Park (from approximately the Menzies Bridge to the Walterdale Bridge) will be blocked off to all watercraft during the fireworks. For public safety, the Public Spaces Bylaw requires life jackets to be worn at all times while in, on or holding onto anything used as water transportation on the North Saskatchewan River. Before taking watercraft out on the North Saskatchewan River, check boat launch notifications as closures may occur.

Drones

For public safety and the integrity of the fireworks display, operating drones is strictly forbidden within and around the Canada Day fireworks zones. In Edmonton, effective May 2025, the updated Public Spaces Bylaw mandates permits for all drone operations on City property. Launching or landing recreational drones is prohibited on public land; takeoffs must occur from private property with the landowner's explicit permission and in compliance with Transport Canada regulations. Additional drone regulations include permits for flights over advertised events and designated areas. Non-compliance may result in fines and equipment confiscation.

Fireworks Safety

Fireworks can be extremely dangerous and disruptive to individuals, property and the environment, particularly in dry conditions, if not used or handled correctly.

Only certified professionals with an approved fireworks permit issued by Edmonton Fire Rescue Services are allowed to use fireworks within Edmonton’s city limits. Always follow permit guidelines and check if there is a fire ban in effect before use and make sure wind conditions are safe.

Under the City of Edmonton’s Public Spaces Bylaw and Community Standards Bylaw 14600, any use of fireworks without proper permits is illegal and subject to enforcement, which can include fines of up to $10,000. Learn more at Fireworks Permits and Safety and connect with the Fire Prevention Office at FirePrevention@edmonton.ca for further information.
