Roots for Trees is one way to get involved with City forestry.

Root for Trees

Root for Trees is a tree planting initiative which increases tree planting within the city.

Root for Trees is an enhanced tree planting program which works to preserve and expand Edmonton’s urban forest through partnerships with corporations, community groups, and individual residents. Edmontonians are invited to participate in tree planting events where they are provided with all the materials required for an exciting and educational day in nature.

Volunteer groups involved in planting events create and enhance naturalized areas throughout parks, along roadways, and in established tree stands. At each event, Root for Trees facilitators promote interactive and environmental awareness-oriented activities by providing expertise on natural topics, promoting the growth of the urban forest, and involving volunteers in many hands-on learning experiences.

With the annual goal of planting 45,000 native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers, Root for Trees continues to work towards the goal of increasing the size of Edmonton’s total urban forest. To volunteer, please visit the Root for Trees webpage.

Request to Plant

Interested in planting trees on public property? Submit a proposal.

The Request to Plant program is a City of Edmonton initiative which works to preserve and expand the urban forest through partnerships with community groups and individual residents.

Edmontonians interested in planting trees on public property are invited to submit a planting proposal for review by an Urban Forester. Final approval will be given based on a specific set of guidelines and requirements. Please review the information at Request to Plant for more details about the application process.

Tree Donation Program

The Tree Donation program offers citizens an opportunity to donate a privately-owned tree to the City for planting on public property. Urban Forestry prioritizes the preservation of trees and will seek to transplant trees that citizens wish to donate. Final approval will be based on a specific set of guidelines and requirements.

This program is currently under review and will be re-opened in late 2020.
