Paper takeout containers, plates and cups (including BPI/BNQ-certified compostable)
It’s okay to put a little bit of paper in your food scraps, like food-soaked paper towels and paper pail liners. However, large or thick paper items, like takeout containers and paper cups, can cause problems.
When food scraps arrive at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre, they are screened to remove plastic contamination. Thick paper products clog the sorting machinery, reducing efficiency. Additionally, the screening machinery cannot tell paper items, such as cups, apart from regular plastic items, so all are removed and sent to the landfill.
