City bylaws are local laws passed by City Council to manage what people and businesses can do in their area. They typically set the rules for everyday community life, including:
- Property and Land Use: deciding what can be built and where (zoning)
- Business Operations: setting rules for how local stores and companies must run
- Safety and Health: keeping the community clean, peaceful and safe for everyone
The Municipal Government Act (MGA) gives Alberta municipalities the power to pass bylaws within their jurisdictions.

Signed Bylaw
Users will require, at a minimum, to find a signed bylaw on an agenda or meeting: the date and meeting at which the bylaw was passed (such as, December 5, 2017, City Council meeting). Having the bylaw number and/or title will make it easier for the user to find the agenda item to which the signed bylaw is linked.
Official bylaws, available from the Office of the City Clerk, must be consulted for the purposes of interpreting and applying the law.
