The Edmonton Valley Zoo is home to a charming and precocious Asian elephant named Lucy, who has been the subject of great attention. Lucy was orphaned in Sri Lanka and was brought to the Edmonton Valley Zoo through partnership with the Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage and Colombo Zoo.
Lucy is often called a "people elephant", and her herd is her zoo family. She simply adores her caregivers who ensure that she's happy and healthy.

Two assessments from qualified, independent elephant experts were completed in the fall of 2021. As we do with each assessment, we asked these specialists for their professional opinion on moving Lucy to another facility and their perspectives on how to improve her home here in Edmonton.
Three independent veterinarians were brought in during the fall of 2019 to complete health assessments on Lucy.
Lucy is continually monitored by the Edmonton Valley Zoo's veterinarian, as well as veterinarians brought in on consultation.
Lucy eats up to 80 pounds of food every day! It's important to be well-fueled for those long walks around the zoo, which help keep her mobile and active.

Did you know Lucy plays soccer and hide & seek? She loves to be in contact with her zookeepers!
