The Edmonton Valley Zoo is home to an Asian elephant named Lucy, who has been the subject of great attention. Lucy was orphaned in Sri Lanka and was brought to the Edmonton Valley Zoo in 1977 through partnership with the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and Colombo Zoo.
Lucy is a beloved member of the zoo family and the Edmonton community. She is looked after by a dedicated team of animal care professionals who work tirelessly to provide her with excellent care.

With the cooperation and financial support of international advocacy organization, Free the Wild, four independent elephant experts assessed Lucy in October 2022, none of whom had previously examined Lucy. This assessment provided great insights into Lucy’s health and wellness, including medical information previously unknown.
Two assessments from qualified, independent elephant experts were completed in the fall of 2021. As we do with each assessment, we asked these specialists for their professional opinion on moving Lucy to another facility and their perspectives on how to improve her home here in Edmonton.
Three independent veterinarians were brought in during the fall of 2019 to complete health assessments on Lucy.
Lucy is continually monitored by the Edmonton Valley Zoo's veterinarian, as well as veterinarians brought in on consultation.
