Spilling the Beans on Alberta’s Caribou!

Date: Thursday, June 4, 2026
Time: Doors — 5pm; Talk — 5:30-7pm
Cost: Free!

Caribou

Alberta’s northwestern boreal landscape encompasses part of the Traditional Territory of Dene Tha’ First Nation and the threatened Bistcho boreal woodland caribou herd. Both the region, including M’Behcho (Bistcho Lake), and the caribou herd hold deep cultural significance for the Dene Tha’ people. The Nation is leading the way for the herd’s recovery through several initiatives, including a proposal for an Indigenous-led conservation area, a Guardians Program, a wildlife monitoring program, and involvement with landscape level planning and habitat restoration.

Our guest speaker will share images from the project and discuss how a dedicated local conservation team from CPAWS Northern Alberta collaborated with the community to develop an integrated methodological approach for designing a remote camera array.

Hosted in the Wild Neighbors Cafe in the Zoo’s public plaza, admission to the zoo is not required for this event. Seating is limited in the cafe, but we will work to reserve a chair for you if you RSVP for the event.

Special Bonus: Come to the Zoo to celebrate World Caribou Day on Saturday, June 6 for lots of Caribou activities and prizes as we celebrate these amazing animals!
