Devastating wildfire can threaten communities and infrastructure. Edmontonians are encouraged to take an active role in protecting our city from the threat of wildfires.
Be fire-safe when smoking outdoors
Improperly extinguished smoking materials are one of the leading fire causes in Edmonton, especially during spring’s dry and windy conditions.
If you smoke outside:
- Only discard smoking materials in large, deep, sturdy, non-combustible ashtrays.
- Wet cigarette butts and matches before putting them in a garbage container to prevent them from smouldering and starting a fire.
- Never extinguish smoking materials in plant pots, potting soil, peat moss, or other types of soil as they can burn easily.
- Never discard smoking materials on the ground, out vehicle windows, or in dry, grassy areas.

Pay attention to Edmonton’s fire bans and fire restrictions
When the fire hazard is extreme, the City of Edmonton may issue a fire ban or fire restriction to protect life and property.
Fire bans and/or restrictions can prohibit any of these activities:
- Open burning
- Fireworks
- Fire pits and cooking stoves in parks
- Backyard fire pits

Fireworks
Especially in dry conditions, fireworks can be extremely dangerous and disruptive to individuals, property and the environment if not used or handled correctly.
Under the City of Edmonton’s Public Places Bylaw 14614 and Community Standards Bylaw 14600, any use of fireworks without proper permits is illegal and subject to enforcement which can include fines of up to $10,000.
