Edmonton Elections is committed to delivering an ethical election that includes transparent processes where the rights of voters are protected. All processes are compliant with provincial and municipal legislation and are designed with a commitment to openness to participation and without bias.
Edmonton Elections uses voting tabulators which are specifically designed to read ballots in real time. Voting tabulators are tested before, during and after they are used. Physical and digital security keys ensure the devices are not altered. Voting data is encrypted and results are only available to election officials after the voting stations close.
The voting tabulators have a number of physical and digital security features that ensure that the devices are not tampered with. The devices and related software undergo rigorous testing before and after each election. Access to the devices is limited to key election personnel only.
During Advance Voting and Election Day, all tabulators are monitored by a Tabulator Clerk to ensure no unauthorized personnel are able to access the tabulator at any time.
Edmonton Elections also has a number of audit control and post-election review processes that are used to verify the results.
When a ballot is scanned in the voting station, the voting tabulator records the voter’s selections, and, if properly completed, those selections are counted and the ballot is deposited in the ballot box.
If the voting tabulator detects an error, such as a blank ballot or an overvote (where the voter has selected more candidates than allowed), the ballot is returned to the voter, allowing them the opportunity to correct the error.
We have been using voting tabulators for more than two decades. Edmonton Elections works with Election Systems and Software or ES&S, a trusted partner for over 20 years, and an industry leader in voting technology.
Their software and voting tabulators use patented technology designed for the sole purpose of supporting elections, and undergo strict regulatory testing to ensure a fair and open election.
