This Patio Program application is for:

  • Option 2: Parklet Patio
  • Option 3: Full Sidewalk Patio & Boardwalk Detour
  • Option 4: Partial Sidewalk Patio (no boardwalk sidewalk required)

Program Requirements Checklist:


IMPORTANT

Your patio proposal does not meet patio program requirements. Please do not proceed with this application,instead contact us directly at patios@edmonton.ca for more information on next steps associated with moving forward with your patio application.

Please refer to the Patio Program Guide for more information on the requirement specifics for the following:
- Maintaining safety around streets, intersections, bike lanes and shared pathways
- Bus Stops
- Edmonton Fire Rescue
- Emergency Exit Access
- Bike racks, waste bins, and other street furniture
- Overhead Structures
- Portable toilet(s) and/or stage


Please make sure to identify any city trees on your patio plan, more detailed review of your patio plan will be required.


Based on your plan for the location of the pedestrian path, more detailed review of your application will be required.

More detailed review will be required to ensure that the requirements around parking are met.


Your patio area must be 10m (32’9”) from the corner if the intersection is controlled (i.e. has a stop/yield sign or signals or a marked pedestrian crosswalk) or 5m (16’5”) from the corner if the intersection is uncontrolled.

More detailed review will be required to ensure that the requirements around signage are met.


If relocation of these items is required to accommodate your patio plan, you may be required to complete additional public engagement, including receiving Business Improvement Area support and you may be responsible for relocation costs. More detailed review of your patio plan will be required.

Outfitting Your Patio



Based on your patio plan, there are requirements that must be met. Please confirm that you have reviewed the requirements in the Patio Program Guide to ensure that your space meets all requirements.
Please note, based on your plan for the patio, additional requirements may need to be met:
Audio-Visual Equipment
Only available for Option 3: Full Sidewalk Patio with Accessible Detour Patios. A Noise Mitigation Plan is required to be submitted as part of your application.
Guardrails, Railings and Barriers
Your patio proposal will be assessed in detail as per the Summer Patio Program guide, please ensure all guideline requirements related to railings are met.
Vertical Posts
Vertical posts can only be used for supporting string lighting or hanging planters. Your proposal will be assessed in detail as per the Summer Patio Program Guide, please ensure all guideline requirements related to vertical posts are met.
Patio Decks or Raised Boardwalk
Your patio proposal will be assessed in detail as per the Summer Patio Program guide, please ensure all guideline requirements related to decks and raised boardwalks are met.
Fire Rescue Requirements
A fire extinguisher (minimum 2A-10BC) is available within 23m (75ft) of any part of the temporary patio and any patio with a perimeter railing must have an emergency exit.

The drawing must showcase the patio location relative to the business frontage. Illustrate the proposed layout of the patio including locations and quantity of tables and chairs, clearly indicate where the 2m of pedestrian space will be accommodated, and identify any City Assets that are directly adjacent to the patio area (ie: trees, tree grates, waste receptacles, fire hydrants, street light poles, or any accessory street furniture).
  • Identify the boundary of the proposed patio area, including dimensions
  • Illustrate the proposed layout of the patio (including, but not limited to, quantity of tables and chairs, umbrellas, railings lighting and heating elements)
  • Clearly indicate where the 2m of pedestrian space will be accommodated
  • Identify if the patio area impacts any loading zones and parking (EPark or other restricted parking zones).
  • Identify any trees or tree grates impacted by or directly adjacent to the patio area
  • Identify any other street furniture impacted by or directly adjacent to the patio area (waste receptacles, fire hydrants, street light poles or any accessory street furniture)
  • Identify any elements associated with ensuring the patio area remains accessible for mobility users
  • Identify if the proposed patio will extend beyond your business frontage. If it does, you need to get written permission from the adjacent property owners and/or tenants confirming they are in support of the proposed patio plan.

To create a patio on the street within the curb lane by repurposing parking space, approximately 10 business days are required for approval. Installation can take place once the City has received the signed Licence of Occupation and the temporary traffic control has been installed.

Noise Mitigation Plan

The inclusion of audio-visual elements to a patio plan is only available for Option 3: Any patio with a perimeter railing must have emergency exits.
