From November 22, 2024-March 2025, the City of Edmonton is hosting the Hear Our Voices: Michel People and Residential Schools exhibit in the City Room at City Hall.
The exhibit, put together by the Friends of Michel Society, shares the stories of 29 Residential School Survivors from the former Michel Band #472, located on the northwest outskirts of Edmonton.
The stories within the exhibit are told by direct and intergenerational Survivors of Residential Schools, who still feel the impacts of Residential Schools to this day. It is an opportunity to learn about the long-lasting and intergenerational trauma and challenges experienced by Indigenous people.
The exhibit exposes their time in the former Residential School in the Edmonton region and supports the Friends of Michel Society’s Residential School Memorialization Project.
It focuses on the institutions where Michel children were taken, as well as the significant hardships and trauma they experienced.
By hosting the exhibit, the City of Edmonton demonstrates its commitment to and partnership with Indigenous people on our collective journey to healing and reconciliation.
City Hall is a gathering place and this exhibit gives room for Edmontonians to learn, reflect and discuss what they learn.
