Wayfinding

Wayfinding helps guide you to city attractions and points of interest, encouraging walking and exploration.

What is Wayfinding?

Wayfinding refers to the tools and techniques people use to orient themselves in physical space and navigate in places they are not familiar with, and includes; maps, signs and Web/Digital applications.

It's often used interchangeably with signage, but includes the design of buildings and spaces. In 2016 the City finalized sign standards for pedestrian wayfinding on-street and a complimentary system for the downtown pedways. Standards have also been developed for the River Valley Parks and are under development for bicycle facilities.

Wayfinding Signs

In 2016, the City recognized a need for interim signage to support the more than 3 million visits annually to the Rogers Place arena.

These interim signs provided flexibility in accommodating downtown construction over the next several years.

Permanent signs are being installed in 2020 in areas not impacted by current or imminent construction, initially in Old Strathcona, Downtown and Stony Plain Road. Interim signs will continue to be utilized where LRT or Streetscape construction will occur.

Future signage is planned for other pedestrian areas around the city, as well as at LRT stations and transit centres.

Pedways

As the City was developing the on-street signage system, the City had a unique opportunity to integrate this work with the outdated signage and mapping on the pedways.

The consultants developed an updated design standard on how to approach updating the pedway signage system designed in the 1980s and to better explain the system on a map. Since then, the work now involves:

  • Utilizing a set of signage guidelines for use by privatedesign standard property owners when and if they update their own signage
  • Ongoing discussions with the building owners towards a more consistent set of operating hours for the pedways and updates
  • Installing and updating annually new maps for use in the system, as well as station maps of 3 of the downtown LRT Stations
  • Updating pedway signage in City-owned buildings / facilities and the legacy overhead system signage, which is owned by the City

Further discussions with private business owners will take place prior to the system being implemented on private property.
