Safe Mobility Strategy
Purpose and Principles
The purpose of the Safe Mobility Strategy is to achieve Vision Zero through safe and livable streets in Edmonton. The strategy will be developed throughout 2020, using public engagement as well as technical data analysis and academic research.
The strategy is guided by the following principles:
- We all move
- We all deserve to move safely
- We are connected
- We are successful when we work together, and
- We are informed by analytics, lived experience and research
The purpose and principles of the Safe Mobility Strategy were endorsed by the Community and Public Services Committee on December 4, 2019.
September 24, 2020
This September, we asked people to help refine the draft themes and key actions that will form the backbone of the Safe Mobility Strategy. Over 1,800 people provided feedback on how to make our streets safer and more livable.
Now, we are compiling the results and will use them to finalize the Safe Mobility Strategy.

June 24, 2020
This June, we asked people what it is like to move around on the streets. We were looking for feedback on the safety of your streets: how they feel, function, and how they work for you.
Over 1800 people completed the online survey, and over 650 pins were added to the map at engaged.edmonton.ca/safestreets between June 8 to 23. We have compiled all of the stories and experiences shared with us during this time into a What We Heard report.
The project has identified a High Injury Network and conducted Crash and Equity analyses to find out where and why serious and fatal crashes are happening, who is most impacted, and what we need to do to eliminate them on our streets. Please read more about our analysis and key findings in this Transforming Edmonton blog post.
Vision Zero Progress
Since Vision Zero began in Edmonton in 2015, traffic-related fatalities in Edmonton have decreased by 56% and serious injuries have declined by 30%. The 2019 Vision Zero Annual Report shows significant progress toward eliminating fatal and serious injury collisions on Edmonton streets. The Safe Mobility Strategy will outline how we continue our success toward reaching Vision Zero.
