Neighbourhood Renewal in Newton was completed in 2019. The shared-use path and corner store pilot program was completed in 2020.

About the Program

Newton, south of 123 Avenue, was chosen for reconstruction beginning in spring 2018. The work was completed in 2019.

Neighbourhood reconstruction is a type of neighbourhood renewal that involves road reconstruction and repaving, as well as replacement of street lights and reconstruction of sidewalks, curb and gutter. Alley renewal is not part of this scope of work.

It also includes the opportunity for 2 local improvements, sidewalk renewal and decorative streetlights.

The area north of 123 Avenue was developed later than the rest of the neighbourhood and the roads, curb and gutter and sidewalks are in better condition than the rest of the neighbourhood. As such, a full reconstruction is not necessary at this stage. In 2014, a neighbourhood overlay project was completed on 123 Avenue and to the north, in which the roads were repaved and the sidewalks treated to eliminate safety hazards.
