Have a Healthy Yard

Herbicides, insecticides and fungicides may help in the short term, but using alternative methods is a better choice for a long term, healthy environment.

Putting Aside the Pesticide

The City of Edmonton follows an Integrated Pest Management Policy which considers alternatives to pesticide use such as:

  • Improving plant health care by watering and fertilizing before using pesticides
  • Having a higher tolerance for broadleaf weeds
  • Designating herbicide-free parks across the city
  • Implementing no-spray buffer zones around daycares and playgrounds
  • Treating school parks when school is out
  • Creating pesticide exemption programs

What You Can Do

The fewer pesticides used will reduce the amount of unwanted chemicals in our water treatment system, resulting in a cleaner river for everyone to enjoy. You can reduce or eliminate the use of pesticides in your yard and help work toward a healthier environment by:

  • Following instructions to avoid repeat treatments
  • Only treating problem areas
