Project Update - November 2019

The City is moving ahead with an alternative signalling plan for the Metro Line LRT. The City's contractor for the project, Alstom Transport Canada Inc., has started installing a fixed-block signalling system on the tracks between MacEwan and NAIT stations. This system will offer a reliable service without needing manual interventions like slower speeds, which is currently necessary with the incomplete Thales signalling system.

Construction and installation of the new system will take about 1 year. The system will then be tested and commissioned before we start using it.

In the meantime, the City will continue to safely operate the Metro Line using the incomplete Thales signalling system we’ve been using since the line opened in 2015.

Edmontonians will start to see work happening on the tracks between MacEwan and NAIT stations. We anticipate that construction will have some impacts to ETS service but are working to limit these impacts as much as possible. About the Project

Operate Phase

The Metro Line is a 3.3 km extension from Churchill LRT Station in downtown Edmonton northwest to NAIT. It’s the first segment of a planned LRT expansion to Edmonton city limits near St. Albert and is part of the Transportation Master Plan’s vision to expand LRT service to all sectors of the City by 2040.

Because land use and transportation are closely linked, LRT growth will be guided by the principle of transit-oriented development. Its goal is to create compact neighbourhoods with a mixture of residential, employment, recreational, and business opportunities within convenient walking distance of transit.
