Current Activity

The City of Edmonton and its partners are beginning preliminary work in advance of enhancement project construction over the next 2-3 years. 

Environmental Impact Assessment and Site Location Study

An environmental Impact Assessment and Site Location Study were completed and approved by the Executive Committee of Council (Item 6.14) on July 4, 2017. 

Public Information Session

A public information session was held on May 2, 2017 to raise awareness of the Fort Edmonton Park Enhancement Project. 

Future public consultation and engagement activities are anticipated in late fall 2017 or early 2018. 

Project Timeline


Construction begins in fall 2017 on the Utility Upgrade Project

  • Construction of the utilities upgrade project
  • Design of Johnny J. Jones Exposition enhancement (Midway)
  • Design of Indigenous Peoples Experience
  • Concept development of the Guest Services Building and Entry Plaza
  • Concept development of Hotel Selkirk Expansion and Windsor Albion Block (1920s Commercial Block)
  • Design of smaller projects and service areas:
    • Guard shack
    • Freight shed expansion
    • Syndicate Avenue Street Car Barn

Project Overview

Utility Upgrade Project, which has resulted in necessary changes to:

  • Whitemud Road
  • Construction of two water meter buildings

The first projects to go into construction phase are the utility upgrade project and Whitemud Road. These are required projects to bring necessary utility and emergency services up to current standards. These projects are expected to begin construction in fall 2017.

New features and exhibits to enhance visitor experience:

  • Indigenous People's Experience: new exhibit feature at Fort Edmonton Park
  • Johnny J. Jones Exposition (Midway at Fort Edmonton Park): new attractions will be added to Fort Edmonton’s midway
  • Guest Services Building and Entry Plaza: improve and streamline access to Fort Edmonton Park
  • Hotel Selkirk Expansion - Windsor Albion Block (1920s Commercial Block): expansion of the hotel and addition of new exhibit - business in the 1920s
  • Freight Shed Extension: improved viewing area for the model railway exhibit
  • Syndicate Avenue Streetcar Barn: extension is planned for the Syndicate Avenue Streetcar Barn to provide increased service area for the street cars

They are taken from the approved 2010 Fort Edmonton Park Masterplan. These projects are at various stages of project development, and future consultation will help shape these new features and exhibits.
