The 101 Avenue Vision and Corridor Study is now complete. Thank you for your input. The information collected will be incorporated into the 101 Avenue Streetscape concept plan.
The 101 Avenue Corridor Study established a vision for the future of 101 Avenue identifying options for land use changes, street design and community programming, and recommending specific actions to realize the area's potential.
Thank you to everyone who attended the October 10, 2019 drop-in engagement session to learn more about the 101 Avenue East Entrance Redirection Test and provided their feedback at the event or online. The input combined with the traffic data collected has been summarized in the 101 Avenue East Entrance Traffic Redirection Test: What We Heard and Observed Report. This information will help inform the next phase of the project, the 101 Avenue Streetscape concept plan. The concept plan is currently in development and public input opportunities will be available.
The month long test in fall 2019 redirected westbound traffic, west of 50 Street, from 101 Avenue to Terrace Road. The test responded to concerns shared by the public during the 101 Avenue corridor study about short-cutting and large truck traffic.
The changed access and permanent westbound closure is recommended to support the long term vision for 101 Avenue by reducing short-cutting, unnecessary traffic and contributing to a better pedestrian experience along 101 Avenue. It will align with Council's Vision Zero and ConnectEdmonton strategic goals.
In 2017, a study was conducted on the 101 Avenue corridor from 50 Street to 78 Street to determine a future vision for the area. Through public engagement, an analysis of policy and land use and a mobility assessment, the study identified specific actions to help realize the area’s potential.
The 101 Avenue Corridor Study was presented to Council’s Urban Planning Committee on June 5, 2018. At the November 13, 2018 Urban Planning Committee meeting, Administration provided a report on opportunities to advance actions to move the vision forward and support active transportation. More information about the actions and impacts to existing operating budgets was presented at the March 19, 2019 Urban Planning Committee.
In December 2018, City Council allocated $2 million to develop the concept plan and preliminary design for 101 Avenue, based on the study, in the 2019-2022 budget cycle. However, capital funding has yet to be allocated to this project. Administration has been tasked to implement actions that support active transportation and contribute to the study’s vision.
Administration explored the feasibility of actions that improve active transportation. The feasibility of potential actions was assessed using the following criteria:
Aligns with the vision and recommendations of the Corridor Study
Be implementable within the short term (1 to 2 years)
Provides a functional improvement for active modes
Funding for implementation is available within existing budgets
Community led initiatives can reasonably be fundraised for by the community
Possible actions explored:
Repurposing city owned right of way to increase space on sidewalks to better buffer pedestrians
Updating placement of bus stop amenities
Adding curb ramps to provide barrier free access
Adding curb extensions to improve pedestrian crossings
Updating or replacing pedestrian crossing signage
Repainting existing marked crossings and assessing locations for new marked crossings
Testing the closure of one-way (westbound) vehicle access to 101 Avenue from 50 Street
Testing the closure of excess driveway accesses that cross sidewalks
Supporting community led initiatives to sponsoring street furniture/beautification, or pop up bike lanes for community led special events
The completed 101 Avenue Corridor Study (27MB), includes recommendations on how to improve 101 Avenue. It also includes history on 101 Avenue, background on the community’s desire to shape the future of 101 Avenue and a glossary to help understand the various planning terms.
The Engagement Summary includes details on the various public engagement activities conducted during the study. The report includes a Water Network Upgrade plan to support the future development on 101 Avenue.
