Pregnancy and Infant Loss Program
The hospitals in the Edmonton area in conjunction with various funeral homes, Edmonton Catholic Cemeteries and City of Edmonton Cemeteries offer services for the interment of babies who have passed away prior to going home from the hospital.
Families who have lost a baby, no matter what the age of gestation, are able to participate in the pregnancy and infant program. The burial takes place approximately 3 months after the passing, however due to confidentiality, families are not permitted to attend the actual burial. Babies are placed into individual ornamental chests and will share the burial site with other babies. Funeral homes and cemeteries rotate in handling these burials at no cost to the families.
After the burial has taken place, you may contact the cemetery to view the burial site. Memorialization options, such as a name plaque are available; however, this is at the family's cost. Please contact the cemetery for more information.
- Passings on years ending with odd numbers (for example, 2017): Burials are conducted by Edmonton Catholic Cemeteries located at Our Lady of Peace 4814 Meridian St NW, Edmonton. Please note the Graveside Ceremony at Our Lady of Peace (Edmonton Catholic Cemeteries) is on the even year (for example, 2018).
- Passings on years ending with even numbers (for example, 2018): Burials are conducted by City of Edmonton Cemeteries located at Northern Lights Cemetery, 15203 Campbell Road. Graveside Ceremony at the Northern Lights (City of Edmonton Cemeteries) is on the odd year (for example, 2019).

Private Family Service
At the time of the baby’s passing, the parents may decline the Pregnancy and Infant Loss Program and may contact a funeral home and cemetery to arrange for a private funeral and cemetery services on their own.
The funeral home will offer a basic service, pickup, a suitable casket or container and transport of the deceased to the cemetery. Depending on the options chosen, fees may apply.
The cemetery will offer a place of burial in a section set aside for infants in any of its cemeteries. The space, a liner to protect the casket and the opening and closing of the grave will be provided to the family for a minimal cost.
The baby is in its own resting place. If the family chooses, they may order a single marker in remembrance. This space may be used in the future for the cremation burial of family members in accordance with the specific cemetery regulations and costs.
