We use public engagement to gather feedback from residents and stakeholders about proposed changes to Waste Services. Thank you for sharing your thoughts in surveys, focus groups, interviews and drop-in sessions.

Apartment and Condo Collection Program Development (2020-2021)

To help inform changes to apartment and condo collection, public engagement was conducted from October 2020 to February 2021. The input was used to inform program recommendations, including decisions around colocation of waste containers, communication and education tactics. Program implementation will begin Fall 2023.

Phase Two: February 2021

We sought feedback from stakeholders and residents on possible program options for waste sorting in multi-unit buildings. Feedback was collected through surveys and used to refine program options.

Phase One: September - October 2020

We gathered input from stakeholders and residents of multi-unit buildings about their needs, barriers and potential solutions for introducing mandatory waste sorting to multi-unit buildings. Feedback was gathered through focus groups, online workshops, phone interviews and one-on-one meetings over the phone.

Future of Waste (2018-2019)

To help inform the 25-year Waste Strategy, public engagement was conducted from January 2018 until April 2019. The strategy was approved by City Council on September 10, 2019.

February 10 - April 15, 2019

Based on the results of public engagement in Fall 2018, we continued to gather input from residents and stakeholders to further refine decisions and recommendations.

We gathered input from residents, property managers and lawn and yard care companies about possible changes to residential grass and yard waste collection services.

January 2018 - Market Research

We conducted a phone survey and four focus groups to ask participants about their current waste habits, and their willingness to support future changes to residential waste programs and services, such as:

Separating food scraps from other types of garbage
Volume limits for garbage
Ceasing collection of grass clippings in the garbage
Moving to seasonal yard waste collection
Use of clear bags for garbage
