The holidays are one of the busiest times of the year when it comes to garbage and recycling.

The Edmonton Waste Management Centre receives twice the amount of garbage in the weeks following December 25, so please try to reduce, reuse and recycle as much as possible this holiday season to reduce your holiday waste.

For any waste that is accumulated over the holiday season, please use our app, WasteWise, to ensure your items are going into the proper stream.

Quick Tips on What Goes Where

Please put the following items in your recycling blue bag or apartment blue bin: cardboard, boxes, paper (including non-foil gift wrap), cans, aluminum trays, and plastic and glass containers, bottles and jars.

Edmontonians are avid recyclers, but putting the wrong material in the blue bag/bin can cause worker injuries, damage equipment or even shut down our recycling facility.

Items that should NOT go in a blue bag/bin include:

  • Food waste: put in the garbage
  • Household hazardous waste: take to an Eco Station
  • Small appliances: take to an Eco Station
  • E-waste: take to an Eco Station
  • Christmas lights and extension cords: take to an Eco Station
  • Styrofoam: put in your garbage
Edmonton's 21 community Recycling Depots are a convenient way to dispose of recyclables from your home.
Items such as broken Christmas lights, electronics and anything with a cord or battery should be taken to an Eco Station.
