A program to assist Edmonton residents with mobility challenges who do not have someone to set out their waste for collection.

Apply for Assisted Waste Collection

The City’s Waste Services offers an assisted waste collection service for customers who have difficulty getting their recycling or garbage to the curb or lane.

Collectors will pick up garbage and recycling from outside the front or back door of the home. There is no additional charge for this service.

Service Types

Curbside Collection

This service is for residents living in single-family homes or multi-unit buildings, who set out waste at the curb or alley for collection.

Currently, collectors are available to pick up waste from the front or back door of the home. Once the transition to cart-based collection begins, residents can choose from two options based on their needs:

  1. The resident can put their waste in carts and only needs the City to set out carts at the curb for collection and return carts to their storage location, or
  2.  The resident needs the City to take waste from the door, place it in carts, set out carts for collection and return carts to the storage location

Bin Collection

This service is for residents living in multi-unit buildings, such as apartments or condominiums, who put waste into a communal bin for collection.

Collectors will pick up waste from your door and bring it to the property’s collection bin for disposal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible?

This service is for Edmonton residents with temporary or chronic mobility challenges who need assistance with setting out their waste, and do not have someone who can set it out for them.

Assisted waste collection promotes independent living and can reduce the risk of dangerous slips and falls caused by icy or wet conditions.

What is the application process?

You can apply for Assisted Waste Collection to begin as soon as possible, or to begin when cart-based collection is implemented in your neighbourhood.

  • Print and fill out our authorized healthcare professional form and have your healthcare provider sign the form.
  • Fill out and submit our online application form. You can also apply via telephone by calling 311.
  • We will contact you by telephone within 10 business days to arrange an in-home interview where customer service staff can help determine the best location for setting out your waste, as well as confirm a start date for your service. The interview will follow all COVID-19 safety protocols.
  • Please be prepared to provide your completed and signed authorized healthcare professional form to City staff at this interview.

In order to receive this service for the Edmonton Cart Rollout, please complete your application at least two weeks before your cart delivery. If you apply within the two weeks prior to your cart delivery, the City will try to expedite your application and accommodate your needs as best as possible.

How will my application be processed?

If you need the service just for cart collection, the City will arrange a home interview with you a few weeks before your first day of cart collection. During the interview, City staff will confirm a cart storage location that can be safely accessed by both you and the City staff, confirm the service commencement date, explain the details of the Assisted Waste program, and answer any other questions you may have about the program.

They will also collect the original signed application form, if it hasn’t already been provided to the City. Your Assisted Waste service will then start on your first cart collection day.

If you need the service before cart collection begins for you, the City will contact you as soon as possible to have the service set up. City staff will conduct a home interview, explain how you will be supported before and after the Edmonton Cart Rollout, confirm the service commencement date, determine the location where they will pick up your waste, their access to your carts, and answer any other questions you may have on the program.

They will also collect the original signed application form, if it hasn’t been provided to the City.

How long can I receive the service?

The Assisted Waste Collection program can be provided on a temporary, seasonal or ongoing basis for as long as you have the need. It is your responsibility to let us know if you no longer need the service by contacting 311.

What will the collector pick up?

The collector will pick up the same materials that are collected from all households and the same regulations will apply.
