City Council’s Affordable Housing Investment Plan (2019-2022) aims to create 2,500 new or renovated affordable housing units across Edmonton. To help meet this goal, the Housing Redevelopment Grant pilot program will transform problem properties into safe, affordable housing for individuals and families.
Problem properties are properties that cause concern to their neighbourhoods, pose risks to tenants and surrounding residents, and have a recurring history of violations and non-compliance. The City is working to address this issue through its Problem Properties Action Plan, which includes enforcement strategies, better communication, and the housing redevelopment grant.
The City will provide up to 40% of capital costs for the redevelopment of up to five problem properties into affordable housing.
Be a non-profit organization with experience in affordable housing development
Demonstrate a connection to the community
Already own the property or have a signed purchase agreement (funds cannot be used for property acquisition)
The City will only consider properties that are vacant or have tenants on short-term leases set to expire. The City will also consider the neighbourhood’s non-market housing ratio in its review process.
Before You Apply
All grant applicants are required to meet with a City housing representative to discuss the project proposal. This step helps to determine if the proposal meets eligibility requirements for the program.
