The City of Edmonton supports the restrictions announced by the Government of Alberta on December 8.

We have adjusted City services to provincial restrictions. We continue to communicate these changes to Edmontonians throughout our website, on social media and directly.

It is more important than ever that Edmontonians do everything they can to keep themselves, their loved ones and their community safe. In addition to following the provincial measures:

  • Continue to wear a mask
  • Wash your hands
  • Maintain physical distance
  • Avoid all indoor and outdoor gatherings
  • Stay home if you’re sick  

Province of Alberta Restrictions

The province has declared a state of public health emergency and put in place new mandatory public health measures across Alberta to protect the health system and slow the spread of COVID-19.

In addition to the mandatory restrictions below, the province has mandated that all Alberta employees must work from home unless physical presence is necessary.

Effective Monday, January 18, some restrictions will be eased:
  • Outdoor social gatherings are allowed up to 10 people.
  • Personal and wellness services are allowed to open by appointment only.
  • Funeral ceremony attendance has been increased to 20 people, with mandatory masking and 2 metre physical distancing. Funeral receptions are not allowed.
The following mandatory restrictions are in effect in Edmonton until further notice:
  • No indoor social gatherings in any setting.
  • No festivals or events are permitted.
  • Places of worship must reduce to 15% capacity with mandatory masking. 
  • Retail stores, grocery stores and shopping malls must adhere to a 15% capacity and there is restricted access to some businesses.

    • Albertans are encouraged to limit in-person visits to retail locations and use curbside pick up, delivery and online services.
    • Food courts are open for take out service only.
  • Businesses that are closed for in-person service include:
    • Banquet halls, restaurants, bars, pubs, night clubs, cafes, lounges, casinos, bingo halls, racing, bowling alleys, pool halls, legions, museums, libraries, conference centres, trade shows, auditoria and concert venues, non-approved/licensed markets, community centres, camps, recreation and fitness centres, pools, and indoor rinks.
    • Children’s play places or indoor playgrounds.
    • All levels of sport (professional, semi-professional, junior, collegiate/universities and amateur). Exemptions may be considered.
  • Outdoor skating rinks and ski and toboggan hills remain open.
  • Child care centres remain open.
  • Wedding services are allowed with a maximum of 10 participants, however no receptions are permitted.
  • Masks are mandatory for all indoor workplaces and public indoor spaces.

Enforcement Activation

The City supports the restrictions announced by the province by activating our enforcement teams.

Through close coordination with Edmonton Police Service (EPS) and Alberta Health Services (AHS), teams of Peace Officers work 7 days a week to support Face Covering bylaw enforcement and Public Health Order monitoring. While enforcement has occurred throughout the pandemic, the City concentrates our efforts on public spaces, gatherings and worship centres. 

Recreation Facilities

  • All City recreation centres, arenas and the Edmonton Valley Zoo remain closed until at least Thursday January 21. Once the province permits these facilities to reopen, it will take from 7-10 days to recall staff and prepare the facilities for the public.
  • The Muttart Conservatory was scheduled to reopen this month after its 18-month rehabilitation project. We will determine a reopening date as we consider the implications of the extension of restrictions.
  • Three City-run Senior Centres and the St. Francis Xavier Sports Centre are also closed.
  • All indoor events and group activities at City facilities have been cancelled.

Outdoor Experiences

Edmontonians are encouraged to take part in outdoor recreation activities with members of their immediate households or their permitted close contacts.

Fireworks Permits

Tier 2 consumer firework permits with a qualified shooter on private or public land will no longer be available to reduce the risk of the social gatherings these events promote.

Tier 1 permits for consumer fireworks on private property remain available.  

Travel Recommendation

The City recommends that Edmontonians limit their non-essential travel and avoid going to other jurisdictions unnecessarily. 

Service Counter Closures

In-person services will be reduced, including the Edmonton Service Centre at the Edmonton Tower, to protect everyone’s health and safety.

City Hall and Chancery Hall are closed to the public.
