The Sanitary Utility contributes to the Sanitary Servicing Strategy Fund (SSSF) to cover the share of costs for using the new sanitary sewer trunk system (pipes >1050mm) to convey and store sanitary sewage. These pipes originate from existing and re-developed neighbourhoods in Mill Woods, Castledowns and West Edmonton that were built prior to the establishment of the Fund in 1999.

The contribution amount was originally set at $2.6M per year from 1999 to 2013 when the Sanitary Servicing Strategy for the 21st Century report was approved by City Council in 1998. This was later adjusted to $1.3M per year for 17 more years starting in 2007.
