At the June 21, 2016, Executive Committee meeting, City staff presented an information report about Secondary Suites in Semi-Detached and Duplex housing. Council directed City staff to prepare amendments to the Zoning Bylaw to allow Secondary Suites in Semi-detached and Duplex Housing.

Council also directed City staff to provide information on the minimum Site Area requirements for all types of suites and on the possible implications of allowing secondary suites in row housing.

What We’re Thinking 

Based on our analysis and feedback from Edmontonians, we think allowing more opportunities for secondary suites will have minimal impact to our neighbourhoods, but will have a big positive impact for individuals by making homes more affordable and providing more housing choices for Edmontonians.

About the Project

This project is currently at the information gathering stage.

This will include technical reviews of existing regulations and implications to any changes, as well as public engagement.

Following the information stage, draft amendments to allow suites in semi-detached and duplex housing, and information on site area requirements will be developed for City Council’s consideration.

It is anticipated these changes will be presented to Urban Planning Committee in February 2018.

Public Engagement

The City of Edmonton is committed to citizen engagement.

City staff conducted an online survey in June 2017. Over 1,700 responses were received. The Insight Community survey results are explained in our public engagement page.

City staff will also be looking for your input on site area requirements, which relates to allowing secondary suites in narrow lot (or skinny) houses, and your perspectives on suites in row housing.
