The City of Edmonton has launched a pilot project to determine if flag-shaped lots are feasible for the average lot type in Edmonton.

A flag-shaped lot, also known as a flag lot, is a lot with a special configuration which resembles a flag and pole. It is usually the remnant shape that is left over once a smaller subdivision has taken place to separate a building, in this case a garden suite, from the original parcel.

The Project Goal

Under the Zoning Bylaw, garden suites can be nothing more than rental opportunities for landowners who decide to build them. The goal of the pilot project is to explore the feasibility of independent ownership of garden suites, instead of renting, on a salable piece of land.
