The physical fitness test, administered by the University of Alberta's Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation, provides a measure of your physical readiness for a career in professional firefighting. You will have a single opportunity to take the test during a recruitment cycle so effective preparation is absolutely critical.
Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) receives two important pieces of information after the physical fitness test is completed.
- The results demonstrate to EFRS, that you, the candidate, can or cannot meet the minimum criteria to perform the physical duties of a professional firefighter
- The results provide you with an accurate indication of your overall physical readiness. Beyond the minimum requirements, the test can identify areas you should continue to work on developing in order to best prepare yourself to be a recruit firefighter, should you be successful in your application
The physical fitness test is challenging and it is expected that the same level of commitment that you invest in preparing for the test will be continued into training and throughout your career.
Prior to receiving a job offer, the recruit firefighter’s physical readiness will be reassessed to ensure all physical requirements are still met.
