Background

The first action of the EndPoverty Edmonton Road Map is “to design and plan an Indigenous Culture and Wellness Centre”.

As the lead on this keystone action, the City of Edmonton brought together a dynamic committee to guide the initial strategic planning phase of this significant project in the fall of 2017. The Indigenous Culture and Wellness Centre (ICWC) Steering Committee is composed of Indigenous representatives from the EndPoverty Edmonton Indigenous Circle and City staff members.

Project Timeline

The first phase of the project consists of a comprehensive environmental scan and broad based community engagements that will inform the strategic goals and direction of the proposed centre, including both its indoor and outdoor spaces.

On March 9, 2018, a pipe ceremony was held to initiate the project. This was soon followed by a community engagement launch hosted on April 12, 2018 where participants were able to learn about the Indigenous Culture and Wellness Centre, and share early thoughts on its vision and planning.

Community engagement sessions has begun and Indigenous peoples from all walks of life are encouraged to participate. For further information and updates, visit Indigenous Culture and Wellness Centre.
